BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost to Ohio University, 10-5, Sunday (April 17) afternoon at Steller Field. The Bobcats avoided the three-game sweep with the victory, as Bowling Green earned wins on Friday and Saturday. Ohio scored 10 of the game's final 12 runs to pull away with the win.
"Overall, I'm really happy with our team and our effort this weekend," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Ohio swept through the MAC Tournament last year, and returned a lot of players from that team, so to win the series this weekend is great. Obviously, we would have loved to get the sweep, and we put ourselves in a good situation to do that by taking the early lead. But as a whole, it was a good weekend for us."
By winning two games on the weekend, Bowling Green improves to 13-23 (4-8 MAC) on the season. By avoiding the sweep, Ohio now owns a 16-19 (5-7 MAC) record.
Bowling Green got off to a fantastic start, as freshman R.J. Williams hit a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, staking the Falcons to an early 3-0 lead. The home run was Williams' first of his career.
The Falcons held on to the 3-0 lead up until the fifth inning. The Bobcats plated three in the top of the fifth to tie the game, and then knocked starter Andrew Lacinak out of the ballgame, and took control of the game with a five-run fifth inning.
Nick Glanzman ripped an RBI single through the box in the bottom of the sixth, but Ohio took a 9-4 lead, getting the run right back with a one-run seventh. Logan Giddings singled home Williams in the eighth, but Ohio concluded the game's scoring with another run in the ninth.
Williams had a massive day in the loss. The freshman outfielder went 4-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. He finished the day a triple shy of the cycle.
Ohio was able to take advantage of Bowling Green errors throughout the ballgame, as only four of the Bobcats' runs were earned. Additionally, all five of Ohio's runs in its five-run sixth were unearned. Ohio was also out-hit by Bowling Green, 10-9.
By taking two of three games on the weekend, Bowling Green put itself right back in the MAC Tournament race. As it sits, halfway through the conference slate, the Falcons are tied for the seven seed with Buffalo, Central Michigan and Toledo. The top eight teams qualify for the tournament.
The Orange and Brown will now hit the road for five-consecutive road games, starting with a Tuesday (April 19) night game at Wright State, which is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start. Bowling Green will then play a three-game set at Ball State across April 22-24, before an April 27 game at Youngstown State.
