"It was important for us to finish our first MAC series with a win at Eastern Michigan," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Overall, I thought we did a lot of things well last weekend, but in order to take that next step, we need to put things together for the course of an entire ballgame. We are now focused on another big week of baseball, starting with Youngstown State.
"They have had a lot of success against us recently, so there's no doubt that we know how good they are. We will have to play well for nine innings in order to get a win, which would allow us to start this week the right way."
Last weekend, the Falcons beat Eastern Michigan to secure its first Mid-American Conference victory of the season. Bowling Green is now 5-15 (1-2 MAC) in 2017. Starting pitcher Zac Carey led the Falcons to the victory on the mound on Saturday (March 25).
The right-handed pitcher logged 6.2 innings, allowing six hits and two runs before exiting with two outs in the seventh inning. Entering that seventh inning, Carey, who struck out two batters and did not issue a walk, had retired 11-consecutive batters. Carey is now 2-2 on the season with a 3.90 ERA.
Derek Drewes went a career-best 4-for-4 from the plate in the win, while Justin Mott went 2-for-4. Both players scored a run and registered an RBI. Greg Basalyga, who had hits in two of the three games, continues to lead the team with a .317 batting average. Randy Righter got on track, as well. He went 3-for-4 with a home run in Friday's (March 24) game, and then had a hit and run in the victory on Saturday. Â
Youngstown State holds an 8-3 advantage in the all-time series. Youngstown State won both games last year. In fact, the Penguins swept the two-game series in 2015, and have won six-straight games over the Falcons.
The Penguins are 4-16 overall, and 2-4 in Horizon League play. The Penguins are hitting .241 as a team, and have four players hitting at least .279. YSU is averaging 8.25 hits and 4.95 runs per contest. As a pitching staff, the Penguins own a 7.38 ERA. YSU has just one pitcher with a sub-6.00 ERA that has thrown at least 10.0 innings.
Bowling Green will head to DeKalb this weekend for a three-game series with Northern Illinois. The series will begin on Friday (March 31) with a 4 p.m. ET start. The ballgames on Saturday (April 1) and Sunday (April 2) will both start at 2 p.m.Â
