BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – With a four-goal second period, the Bowling Green hockey program claimed a one game lead over Ferris State in the first round of the WCHA Playoffs in a 6-1 final. Senior Matt Pohlkamp fueled the Falcons scoring spree with a four point performance, giving Bowling Green a game up in the best-of-three series.

In addition to Pohlkamp, three other Falcons also appeared on the box score multiple times as senior captain Sean Walker had a three point night in a goal and two assists. Juniors Brett D'Andrea and Tyler Spezia each earned a pair of assists for their fifth and sixth multipoint nights of the season, respectively.

A native of Baxter, Minn., Pohlkamp was able to pick up the puck in the crease as Ferris State's goaltender Justin Kapelmaster lost track of it in a jumble down low. Pohlkamp swooped in for his first of the night and ninth of the season at even strength to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead 6:46 into the first period.

Then just over two minutes later, sophomore Stephen Baylis scored for the first time since Dec. 9 to make it 2-0 with another rebound down low. The goal was Baylis' third of the year to lift the Falcons to a comfortable 2-0 lead just 9:15 into the game.

The two-goal lead didn't last for long as the Bulldogs cut the Falcons margin to 2-1 just 17 seconds into a Bowling Green 5:00 major penalty. It would be the first power play goal the Falcons have sacrificed since Feb. 4, while the Falcons had killed the last 24 consecutive penalties across the month of February.

With the goal against, junior goaltender Chris Nell set the Bowling Green program record of scoreless minutes at 220:18, shattering the former record of 154:43. A native of Green Bay, Wis., Nell had shutout the Falcons last three consecutive opponents, and has four shutouts on the year thus far. Tonight, Nell tallied 27 saves, including a game-high of 15 in the third period, ultimately marking just the lone power play goal against on the night.

The Falcons then exploded with a four-goal second period to extend its lead to a 6-1 mark after 40:00 of play. Bowling Green saw its first power play action 2:34 into the second period as Ferris State was called for hooking, and after just 24 seconds, Pohlkamp made it a 3-1 game with his second of the night.

In quick succession, Walker was able to capitalize on the breakaway and stretch the lead to 4-1 just 52 seconds after Pohlkamp's second of the night. The goal was Walker's 10th of the season.

The Bowling Green offensive rampage continued as freshman Alec Rauhauser extended the lead to 5-1 with his fourth of the year from the point. The goal marked the third of the period in just a mere 2:51 time span. Finally, with 2:13 remaining in the second, fellow freshman Lukas Craggs went bar down from the blue line to make it 6-1 and to close out the second period scoring spree.

Leading up to the midway point of the game, Bowling Green was outshooting Ferris State by an 8-0 margin in the second period, and the Falcons ultimately held the Bulldogs to just three shots on goal in the second period. On the night, Bowling Green outshot Ferris State by a 33-28 margin, while the Falcons tied its season best of 18 shots on goal in the second period.

In addition to his pair of goals, Matt Pohlkamp tallied assists on both Walker and Rauhauser's goals, giving him a four point night. The performance ties his career high and is a new season best for the forward.

Bowling Green now holds an undefeated record of 7-0-0 this season when scoring five or more goals. The Falcons will look to extend the record further tomorrow as it hosts the Bulldogs in game two of the best-of-three series in a 7:07 p.m. puck drop at the Slater Family Ice Arena.
