BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In the rubber match of the weekend series, the Bowling Green State University baseball team dropped an 8-2 contest to Central Michigan University on Sunday (April 23) afternoon at Steller Field. The Chippewas scored the first eight runs of the ballgame, and quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
With the loss, Bowling Green falls to 10-25 (5-10 MAC) on the season, while MAC-leading Central Michigan, which was dealt just their second MAC loss of the season yesterday, improves to 21-18 (10-2 MAC) with the victory.
"I thought their starting pitcher was really good," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "He did a really nice job of keeping us off balance. We had a couple of chances early on, when we were down just three, to try and get back into the game. He pitched out of it, and then really settled in.
"We played two really strong games this weekend, and it's unfortunate that we took just one game, but we are still more than in the race, and we'll have to be ready for another big week of baseball, starting on Tuesday."
Central Michigan's Daniel Jipping registered all seven of the Chippewas' RBI. He hit a pair of three-run home runs. His first home run gave CMU a 3-0 lead in the first, and his second bomb increased the visitor's lead to 6-0 in the third. Jipping scored another run with a single in the sixth, and then a wild pitch later in the frame concluded CMU's scoring on the day.
In the eighth, Bowling Green plated a pair. Riley Minorik drove home Randy Righter with a ground out to second, and then Cam Daugherty followed with a single to center that scored Greg Basalyga.
Damon Egnor had a stellar performance from out of the bullpen for the Orange and Brown. He logged a career-high 3.1 innings, and did not allow a single hit. He tied his career high with three strikeouts, while also recording two walks.
Bowling Green heads to Kent State on Tuesday (April 25) to battle the Golden Flashes in non-conference action. On April 11, the Falcons hammered Kent State at Steller Field by a score of 9-3. Bowling Green will then host Miami for a weekend series across April 28-30.
