ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team staged a furious late-inning comeback, but the University of Michigan held on for a 5-4 victory on Sunday (March 18) afternoon. The game was played at Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor.
"Again, I couldn't be more proud of the effort," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "But the bottom line is that we have to execute. Late in the game, they executed and we didn't. We had every chance to win the game."
Trailing by a score of 5-1 in the eighth inning, the Falcons scored three runs and loaded the bases before Michigan recorded a single out. However, with the bases juiced and BGSU in a 3-0 count, Michigan clamped down and struck out three-consecutive batters to keep its 5-4 lead intact.
Bowling Green put its leadoff man on in the ninth, but the Falcons couldn't advance him, as Michigan hung on for the 5-4 win.
Michigan earned the sweep by escaping with the victory. The Wolverines are now 7-11 on the season. Bowling Green drops to 3-16. The Falcons are scheduled to play a 3 p.m. contest at the University of Dayton on Wednesday, March 21.
