BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened up Mid-American Conference play on Friday (March 23) afternoon with a 6-4 win over Ohio University at Steller Field. The win marked BGSU's first win in a conference opener since 2011.
Â
Head Coach Danny Schmitz picked up his 699th win at Bowling Green. Schmitz is the MAC's active leader in all-time wins.
Â
The Falcons are now 2-0 at home for the first time since 2012. With the victory over the Bobcats, Bowling Green improved to 5-16 on the season, while Ohio falls to 11-9 with the loss.
Â
"I think our guys are starting to see what we are capable of when we execute the three phrases for nine innings," said Schmitz. "We even had a few hiccups in the eighth inning, but when you are playing with some confidence, you can overcome those things. I've been extremely happy with our effort and execution the past few games."
Â
SENIOR PITCHING GETS IT DONE FOR THE FALCONS
• Senior right-handed pitcher Zac Carey turned in a fantastic start on the mound.
• The righty from London, Ohio allowed just five hits over 7.0 innings. He struck out five batters, and did not issue a single walk.
• Carey worked three perfect innings, and used a double-play ball to face the minimum in the sixth. The senior picked up the win to improve to 2-2 on the season.
• Senior southpaw Kody Brown earned his first save of the season by working the final 2.0 innings.
• He came on in the eighth, and the first two batters reached base via errors. After a sacrifice bunt, Brown registered a strikeout, and then fielded a weak grounder back to himself for the final out of the inning.
• In the ninth, Ohio hit a solo home run with two outs before the senior induced a fly out to center field to end the game.
Â
A PAIR OF THREE-SPOTS FOR THE BGSU OFFENSE
• Bowling Green scored three runs apiece in innings one and six. Ohio tied the game with two runs in the second and one run in the fourth, prior to BGSU's three-run sixth.
• In the first, after OU retired the leadoff batter, Jeff Scott doubled, and then Brad Croy walked.
• A Randy Righter double got BGSU on the board, and then Derek Drewes grounded out to the shortstop to score another run. Cam Daugherty notched a two-out single to score the third run.
• In the sixth, Scott delivered a two-out hit with the bases loaded that scored two. Neil Lambert then came around to score on a wild pitch to give the Falcons a 6-3 lead.
Â
TWO-HIT DAYS
• Jeff Scott, Randy Righter, Cam Daugherty and Jake Wilson each registered two hits for a Falcon offense that totaled 10 on the day.
• Ty Suntken and Justin Mott each posted one hit for the Orange and Brown.
• Scott's two-run single in the sixth pushed his RBI total on the season to a team-high 14. Righter, Drewes and Daugherty each recorded one RBI apiece.
Â
