Falcons Stun Ball State: Neibauer’s Walk-Off Single Caps Five-Run Ninth
April 20, 2018 | Baseball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – In one of the more unbelievable comebacks that a baseball fan will ever see, the Bowling Green State University baseball team scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to stun Ball State University in walk-off fashion, 6-5, Friday (April 20) afternoon at Steller Field.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth, Ball State's John Baker was well on his way to a complete-game win. Baker struck out the first batter he faced in the ninth, giving him 10 strikeouts on the day. With the strikeout, Baker had retired 14-consecutive batters.
Six batters later, Baker had a no decision and the Falcons had a 6-5 victory. Nick Neibauer capped the five-run ninth with a walk-off single that was lined down the right-field line. Jeff Scott, who had just doubled, scored on the play to secure the win for the Orange and Brown.
"This was a heck of a win for us," said head coach Danny Schmitz. "Staying in the game and pulling it out like that really tells you a lot about our young men. We need to come out, and really play well tomorrow. We know Ball State is going to be ready."
With the win, Bowling Green improves to 10-23 overall and 5-6 within the Mid-American Conference. Ball State drops to 17-19 (5-8 MAC).

• Dylan Dohanos started the rally with a one-out infield single to the shortstop. Derek Drewes followed with a blooping single that dropped into left field.
• Randy Righter then scored Dohanos with a double into the left-centerfield gap.
• Bowling Green's next batter, Neil Lambert, stepped to the plate representing the tying run. With two strikes, Lambert launched a moon shot to right field. The absolute no-doubter – a three-run bomb – tied the game at 5-5. The home run also chased John Baker from the ballgame.
• Cody Freed entered for the Cardinals, and was immediately greeted with a Jeff Scott double to left-center that nearly got over the fence.
• Scott's double set up Nick Neibauer's heroics. Neibauer drilled a single down the right-field line to give the Falcons the improbably victory.
KODY BROWN HOLDS IT DOWN
• Bowling Green starter Zac Carey was chased after 4.1 innings of five-run ball. Southpaw Kody Brown entered the game in the fifth, and went on to throw 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball.
• Brown picked up his second win of the season following Neibauer's walk-off hit. The senior is now 2-1 on the campaign.
• The lefty allowed just three hits, and struck out four while not issuing a single free pass.
• With his tremendous effort, Brown lowered his ERA to a team-low figure of 2.28 in 2018.
• Brown has now made 88 appearances across his career. He needs just four more appearances to break the school record.
10-HIT DAY FOR THE OFFENSE
• Dylan Dohanos (2-for-4) and Neil Lambert (2-for-4) registered two hits apiece for the Orange and Brown. Dohanos scored two runs, while Lambert, thanks to his three-run blast, drove in three RBI while also scoring a run.
• Bowling Green's other hits were recorded by Jake Wilson, Derek Drewes, Randy Righter, Jeff Scott, Nick Neibauer and Justin Mott.
• Along with Lambert's three RBI, Drewes, Righter and Neibauer drove in one run apiece.
UP NEXT
• The three-game series will conclude with 1:05 p.m. starts on Saturday (April 21) and Sunday (April 22).
