June 08, 2018 | Ice Hockey
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After a 4-3 win over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, two Bowling Green hockey alums in Brian MacLellan and Todd Reirden will have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup with the Washington Capitals organization. With MacLellan serving as general manager and Reirden as assistant coach, the pair helped lead the Caps to its first-ever Cup in franchise history.
A First Team All-American and BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame member, Washington Capitals GM Brian MacLellan sported the Orange and Brown from 1978-82, where the Falcons earned a pair of CCHA regular season titles in addition to the CCHA Playoff title in 1979. A two-year co-captain, MacLellan tallied a four-year record of 93-63-8, while registering 143 points by 64 goals and 79 assists. After his career with the Falcons, MacLellan enjoyed an extensive 10-year playing career in the NHL, where he recorded 413 points by 172 goals and 241 assists in 606 games played. A second for his career, No. 24 first raised the Stanley Cup in 1989 with the Calgary Flames.
Behind the bench, 1990-94 Bowling Green defenseman Todd Reirden helped lead the Caps to its first Stanley Cup Championship in his fourth year as assistant coach for the program. Reirden tallied 76 points in his four-year career with the Falcons, by 24 goals and 52 assists in 140 games played, and appeared in the NHL for five seasons before beginning his coaching career back with the Falcons in the 2007-08 campaign.
The Stanley Cup Finals were speckled with Falcon history, as the Vegas Golden Knights' GM George McPhee co-captained with MacLellan, and Vegas' forward Ryan Carpenter played for the Bowling Green program from 2011-14 before earning five assists and a plus-5 rating on the ice throughout the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs with the expansion team. Other Falcon Hockey alumni ties also included Golden Knights Assistant Equipment Manager JW Aiken, and beloved personality Mike "Doc" Emrick on the call for NHL on NBC.
Of the 35 NHL-ers that Bowling Green has produced, seven have now earned the privilege of raising the Stanley Cup, including Rob Blake (Colorado Avalanche, 2001), Dan Bylsma (Coach of Pittsburgh Penguins, 2009), Greg DeVries (Colorado Avalanche, 2001), Nelson Emerson (LA Kings Staff, 2014), MacLellan (Calgary Flames, 1989; Washington Capitals GM, 2018), Ken Morrow (New York Islanders, 1980-83), and Todd Reirden (Assistant Coach of Washington Capitals, 2018).
The Bowling Green hockey program recently unveiled its 2018-19 schedule, while season tickets are on sale now.
