A Weekend Of Celebration
In addition to being the final regular season home series for the Falcons, the team will be reflecting and celebrating on multiple aspects of the program on Saturday (Feb. 22). Headlining the weekend is the program's 50th Anniversary, celebrating the history of the program that began in 1969 and has amassed 10 NCAA appearances and the 1984 National Championship among countless other accolades. Additionally, the Falcons will be recognizing the current team's four seniors, being Frederic Letourneau, Casey Linkenheld, Jacob Dalton and Alec Rauhauser. Over the last four seasons, the quartet has helped lead the Orange and Brown to 84 total wins with 57 being within WCHA play while also returning to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 29 years. Rounding out the festivities will be the unmasking of BGSU's SICSIC. Hulk and Frosty's identities will be revealed during the game's second intermission.Â
Battling The Bulldogs
Bowling Green will play host to Ferris State this weekend, being the first series between the teams this year with the last being over a year ago on Jan. 26, 2019. The Bulldogs are coming off four straight losses, being swept by Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan over their last two series. Ferris State's last win came against Michigan Tech on Jan. 25, breaking a nine-game losing streak, being the only win for the Bulldogs over their last 14 games. Statistically, Ferris State has seen a team approach on the ice, having eight players with double-digit points with two more close with nine. Jake Willets leads the way with 19 points, despite having just four goals. With that being said, just Marshall Moise has double-digit goals, logging 10 on the season.Â
The Series At A Glance
Having faced Ferris State 143 times in program history, the Bulldogs are one of the Falcons' most familiar opponents, have opposed just Western Michigan (151), Ohio State (166) and Lake Superior State (175) more often. With 70 wins in the series, the Orange and Brown boast a .534 winning percentage with 13 of the games concluding in ties. The Bulldogs took the last meeting, coming last January, by a score of 3-0. Despite this, the Falcons have dominated the series of late, being 8-1-1 against Ferris State over the last 10 meetings, including three consecutive sweeps between the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.Â
Last Time Out
The Orange and Brown are coming off a weekend split against Alaska, but not the traditional split. Both the Falcons and Nanooks came away with three points following ties on Friday and Saturday seeing both nights go to at least double-overtime. Alaska picked up the extra WCHA point on Friday night, scoring 45 seconds into the second overtime. As for Saturday, the Falcons came away with the second point, needing a shootout to claim it. In the third round of the shootout, Brandon Kruse scored to make the weekend an even split.Â
Around The WCHA
The WCHA standings only got closer over the last week. With Minnesota State off, Bemidji State gained ground, now being just five points behind the Mavericks. Northern Michigan is holding on to third place, but by only one point, having 44 total. Fourth and fifth are held by Alaska and Michigan Tech, who will both be off this weekend, having 43 and 41, respectively. In sixth, the Falcons will have a chance at gaining six points this weekend, which would move them up to a tie with Alaska for fourth in the conference. Lake Superior State and Alaska Anchorage round out the top eight in the conference.Â
Hauser For Hobey
The senior captain Alec Rauhauser continued to improve his case for the Hobey Baker Award, tallying a multiple-point effort in last Friday's 2-2 tie against Alaska, marking his third of the season. Scoring the first goal of the game and later assisting on the second score, Rauhauser moved his season total up to 30 points while logging his 10th goal of the season, being a new career-high. Now with 117 career points, Rauhauser is just one point shy of moving into a tie for 54th all-time in program history for career points.Â
Almost There
With two points on the weekend, Brandon Kruse now has 99 career points in the Orange and Brown, needing just one more to join the 100 point club. With Alec Rauhauser doing it earlier this year, they would be the first pair of teammates to hit the mark in the same season since 1995-96 when five Falcons did so being Curtis Fry, Mike Johnson, Kelly Perrault, Jason Clark and Mike Hall.
