Three Power Play Goals Propel Falcons To Second Consecutive Sweep

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. Â - The Bowling Green State University hockey team captured the weekend sweep over Alabama Huntsville on Saturday (Feb. 29) with a 4-1 final, marking the fourth consecutive win for the Falcons and extending their unbeaten streak to eight games, being 6-0-2 over the span. On the offense, the Orange and Brown were led by three power play goals capped off by an empty-netter to secure the victory. The win puts the Falcons regular season record at 19-13-4 overall and 14-10-4-3 in the WCHA. With other games still going on across the WCHA, Bowling Green will wait for results to see their matchup for the first round of the WCHA playoffs next weekend.Â

Scoring Plays
- Near the halfway mark of the first period, Taylor Schneider capitalized on the first power play opportunity of the game, netting a goal for the Falcons. Cameron Wright and Alec Rauhauser were credited with the assists on the score.
- The Chargers tied it up in the first period with a 5v3 advantage, seeing a goal from Austin Beaulieu with assists from Connor James and Josh Latta.
- On the power play, Brandon Kruse scored the goal that broke the tie for the Falcons, coming on assists from Max Johnson and Connor Ford.Â
- With the power play continuing due to the five-minute major, Ford added a score of his own less than two minutes later, and with just six seconds left in the power play. Johnson again assisted, being joined by Rauhauser.Â
- After the Chargers pulled their goalie, Carson Musser shot the puck into the empty net with just under a minute remaining in the game to extend the score to 4-1 with an assist going to Schneider.Â
Other Key Plays
- With just under five minutes remaining in the first period, Alex Barber knocked a rebound into the back of the net for what was thought to be the second goal of the game. After further review, the goal was waved off for a high stick.Â
- Before the end of the first period, a checking from behind call went against Bowling Green, evening power play opportunities at one in the first period. The Orange and Brown were able to kill off the UAH penalty with the 1-0 lead still intact.Â
- At the end of the first period, Sam Craggs was issued a five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for boarding.Â
- With 8:44 remaining in the second period, Jacob Dalton was slammed against the boards and a five-minute major and game misconduct was issued against UAH's Connor Merkley, ejecting him from the game and giving the Falcons an extended power play that turned into two goals.Â
- With 3:05 left in the second period, Adam Pitters was issued a 10-minute misconduct, but the teams remaining at full strength, 5v5 hockey.Â
- In the second period, just 4:57 were played with both teams at full strength on the ice. For 3:05 of that, Pitters was in the box for Bowling Green, but play was still 5v5.Â
- The third period began with full strength hockey for an extended period before UAH's Jeffers was called for a 10-minute misconduct, ending his season. Like Pitters', the call didn't result in a power play.Â
Falcon Stat Facts
- Schneider's first period goal was the 41st power play score of the year for the Falcons, extending their hold on first place in the nation for the category. Kruse and Ford both added power play goals of their own to bring the team's total to 43.Â
- Schneider's score was also his eighth of the season, setting a new career-high for single season goals.Â
- Johnson had two assists in the second period alone, bringing his career point total to 95. Rauhauser and Kruse each hit the 100 point milestone earlier this season.Â
- In the second period, Ford scored his ninth power play goal of the season, tying him with Wright for the team lead and for fifth in the nation.Â
- With two assists, Rauhauser tallied career assists 92 and 93, also being career points 120 and 121, pushing him past fellow defensemen Brian McKee on the all-time scoring list, now the ninth highest scoring defensemen in program history.Â
- With the empty net score, Musser tallied his first career goal with the Falcons.Â
- Capturing the win, the Falcons are now 15-2-2 when leading at the end of the second period.
- Thanks to Musser's goal to put the tally at four, Bowling Green is now 10-0-0 when scoring four or more goals this season.Â
