Box Score
ATHENS, Ohio – After dropping the series opener by a single run, the Bowling Green State University baseball team earned three-straight wins over Ohio University to claim a road-series victory on Mid-American Conference opening weekend. The Falcons beat the Bobcats by a score of 11-5 on Monday (March 22) to secure the program's first road-series win to begin MAC play in 10 years. With today's win, BGSU improves to 3-1 in league play and 5-9 overall in 2021.
The Falcons were not going to be denied on the day, as the Orange and Brown scored six runs in the top of the first inning before OU could record an out. Adam Fallon capped the six-run party with a no-doubt grand slam to right field.
BGSU tacked on another run in the third to take a 7-0 lead. OU scored three in the seventh and two in the ninth, but the Falcons maintained distance by plating four in the eighth. Jack Krause scored a run with a single, prior to runs crossing the plate due to an error and wild pitch.
Each of Bowling Green's top-six batters in the lineup registered at least one hit. Krause and Adam Furnas each posted two hits and two runs. Krause drew two walks and had two RBI, as well. Jared Johnson also had two hits, finishing 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored. Fallon's lone hit was the huge grand slam. Kyle Gurney completed his big series by going 1-for-4 with two runs, one RBI and one walk.
Gage Schenk continued the weekend theme of dominant pitching. The right-hander blanked the Bobcats over six shutout innings. Schenk had seven strikeouts compared to three walks, while only surrendering three total hits. The win for Schenk is his second of the season. The native of Wapakoneta now has four wins in his career as a Falcon. Freshman Landon Willeman worked the final 2.1 innings to pick up the first save of his collegiate career.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"I'm so proud of this team and their ability to respond from Game 1 to Game 4 of this road series. There was a whole lot of growth and maturity showed by every member of this program over each of the games. To win the way we did is a great experience for our players. They have worked very hard to put themselves in positions to win games so far and their will power to succeed this weekend was special. The beginning of the game was exactly what we wanted to make happen. We kept it more station-to-station base running wise to keep traffic out there and push the lead with constant pressure, and then Adam Fallon caught a fastball that he could handle and put it out for a home run. The first six at-bats were just really high-level performances. We believe our lineup has the ability to score in bunches, especially now that more guys are getting extended at the plate. As the game progressed, we did hit a little bit of a lull and that's a credit to their bullpen's ability to pitch. But the way we came back off their top reliever in the eighth -- to answer their three-spot -- shows our increased ability to respond. Everyone in the lineup contributed in a big way from Fallon, to Ross, Krause, Furnas, Gurney, Johnson, Gaytan, Rose and Dohanos. Pitching wise, Gage Schenk made great adjustments this week in practice and implemented some new features into this game that will continue to benefit him throughout his career. He's a warrior and kept them off the scoreboard in the fifth inning when they had a chance to cut into the lead -- and that was huge. Will MacLean threw the ball really well and his numbers don't indicate how well he actually did. He got ground ball after ground ball and had really good stuff, but he was on the receiving end of some bad luck. Landon Willeman came on in a tight spot and did what we are learning he can do, make pitches under pressure. It was good to see him navigate his way through the last seven outs of the game, and he also threw the ball better than his numbers. Defensively, we didn't play a clean game in any of the games, so we will have some work to do this week in practice. But since we pitched it so well, we overcame some of those instances. Andy Gaytan's diving catch to record the 27th out just really showed our team that defense is a staple of our success and that we will continue to play it at a high level throughout the remainder of the season."
