AKRON, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team dropped its series opener on Friday (March 26) at the University of Akron. The Zips beat the Falcons by a score of 6-3 in the first of four Mid-American Conference games this weekend. The series is being played at UA's Skeeles Field. Both teams are now 3-2 in conference play.
Â
A four-run third inning proved to be the difference for the Zips. After the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Akron took back control of the game with a three-run third and two-run fourth.
Â
Adam Furnas hit an opposite-field solo home run in the fourth for the Falcons. Mason Montgomery, Kyle Gurney, Adam Fallon and Dylan Dohanos also recorded hits for the Orange and Brown. Bowling Green's bullpen worked three scoreless innings, led by two innings of two-hit ball from Jeremy Spezia. David Stopp struck out three batters in one scoreless inning on the bump.

COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"Today's game was not played to our standards. Our approach at the plate was one that limited our ability to put pressure on their pitching and defense. It's unacceptable and we will correct it moving forward. Adam Furnas was ready with the bat offensively as he put multiple good swings on pitches and had a sound approach. As a unit, our bullpen of Jeremy Spezia and David Stopp did a fine job on the mound of giving us an opportunity to come back offensively, so it was good to see them moving in the right direction. Bullpen zeros are a very good thing. Defensively, we didn't make an error in the stat column, but there were two plays that have to be made for us to limit the damage. They're plays we make in practice regularly that led to extra pitches and extra outs that Akron capitalized on. In turn, when those plays don't go our way, we have to get nasty on the mound to pitch ourselves out of the inning. It's time for us to respond now. It's a quick turnaround with the doubleheader and we need to be ready to go."
