Box Score
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team earned its first series win of the 2021 season on Sunday (March 7) by defeating the James Madison University Dukes, 10-4, at Veterans Memorial Park. BGSU picked up the series win by also beating JMU in Friday's (March 5) series opener. Sunday's victory secured Bowling Green its first non-conference series win on the road since February of 2015.
Bowling Green improves to 2-4 on the season with the win. BGSU scored 10-plus runs multiple times in a series victory for the first time since scoring 13 runs in back-to-back games against Buffalo in May of 2015.
After opening the game with a two-run first, James Madison scored the next three runs to take a 3-2 lead heading into the fourth. The Falcons changed the game in that fourth frame, however, scoring six times to take the lead for good. BGSU's offense was led by Adam Furnas, who went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored. Furnas capped the six-run fourth with a two-run single with the bases loaded.
Jared Johnson sparked the six-run inning with a two-run blast to right centerfield, which gave the Orange and Brown a 4-3 lead. Johnson also drove home a run in BG's two-run first.
Tyler Ross, Ryan Johnston and Adam Fallon all stole bases for the Falcons. Ross served as a catalyst in the lead off spot, scoring three times and walking twice. Fallon's steal set up a Mason Montgomery RBI single in the fourth inning. Jack Krause notched a hit and scored a run. Fallon also had two hits. Gurney brought home a run with a bases-loaded walk.
BGSU received a number of contributions on the mound, starting with starter Gage Schenk, who earned the win by logging four innings of three-run ball. Jeremy Spezia followed, and was masterful across 3.2 innings. Spezia surrendered one run and two hits, punching out four batters in the process. Logan Bell got the last out in the eighth, and then Will MacLean slammed the door shut in the ninth.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"Today was a great way to finish off the weekend. Our players made it happen and I'm very proud of their ability to bounce back after Saturday's game. We had a number of guys contribute all weekend in a variety of ways and it was good to see our practice translate to game performance. Adam Furnas, local product from BG High School, was outstanding today. The way he talked from pregame through the final out shows how much he's growing as a leader. His four hits were a byproduct of his ability to turn the page from yesterday. Jared Johnson got the big hit with the home run to give us the shot in arm we needed. It was his "Welcome to BGSU" moment and something we are anticipating more of as the season moves along. The remainder of the lineup did a great job of hitting with two strikes and also with two outs. We grinded out a good opponent to work the counts in our favor offensively. Defensively, we smothered the baseball all day. As the game wore on, our defense had a swagger that you need to close out baseball games with. On the mound, Gage Schenk made the adjustment from last week to this week. He took a good punch from their lineup but came right back in the third and fourth to show why he's the warrior we believe he is. Jeremy Spezia was on a mission today. He took complete control of the game and attacked the lineup, pitching to his strengths. His mound presence was awesome. He was the difference between the two pitching staffs today. Logan Bell got a huge out for us. We asked him to match up with their best hitter and he rolled the ground ball we needed to stop any late momentum against us. Will MacLean's finish to the game was impressive. His pace, rhythm and timing was all there and he got after every single hitter he faced. It was fun to watch him go about his business like that."
