KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team was defeated in a Friday (April 23) doubleheader at Western Michigan University. The Broncos won the first game, 12-7, before claiming the night cap by a score of 7-5. The Falcons drop to 7-11 in conference play following the action, while WMU improves to 12-6. Both league contests were played at Western Michigan's Robert J. Bobb Stadium.
Â
Adam Furnas' three-run home run in the opener gave the Falcons the momentum early, but the Broncos would go on to score 10-straight runs to take control of the contest. Furnas had another big day at the plate, racking multiple hits in both ballgames. Tyler Haas, Nathan Rose and Anthony Toma all drove in one run apiece for the Falcons in the series opener.
Â
The Falcons plated three runs in the top of the first to begin the night cap. Kyle Gurney brought home two with a shot into center field, and then Rose drove him home with a single up the middle. BGSU bumped its lead up to 4-0 in the third when Gurney scored on an error.
Â
After the Broncos pulled within one, the game changed on a very difficult break for the Falcons in the top of the fourth. With two runners in scoring position, Gurney lined a ball into left field. The left fielder made a diving catch, allowing Dylan Dohanos to tag and score from third. However, WMU appealed to third and got the call, ending the inning and taking a run off the board.
Â
WMU took advantage of the break, scoring four of the game's final five runs. BGSU had the tying run on base in the sixth and brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but the Broncos were able to nail down the victory.
Â
Logan Bell fired a scoreless sixth in relief for the Orange and Brown. Furnas, Gurney, Rose and Andy Gaytan led the BGSU offense in the second game, racking up two hits apiece. Bowling Green registered 11 hits compared to WMU's nine. The series will resume with a 1:05 p.m. first pitch on Saturday (April 24).
