Box Score
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team, behind 8.2 dominant innings from starter Gage Schenk, defeated Western Michigan University by a score of 3-2 Saturday (April 24). The Mid-American Conference series is being staged at WMU's Robert J. Bobb Stadium. BGSU goes for the series split tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.
With the win, Bowling Green improves to 8-11 in conference play. The Falcons are 8-7 in MAC road ballgames in 2021. WMU, winners of nine of its last 10 coming into the game, drops to 12-7 within the conference with the loss.
Schenk moved to 4-1 on the season with yet another masterful start. Schenk is 3-0 in MAC play, having allowed just three earned runs over 22.2 innings. On this afternoon, Schenk yielded two hits and two runs. The second hit and second run that he surrendered came with two outs and two strikes in the ninth, as the Broncos pulled within one with a single that bounced through the left side. Will MacLean then came into the ballgame and induced a weak ground ball to first base to secure the victory. In the process, MacLean earned his second save of the season.
The BGSU offense applied pressure all afternoon, out-hitting Western Michigan by a 12-2 margin. Eight Falcon starters registered at least one hit, while Adam Furnas, Kyle Gurney, Adam Fallon and Andy Gaytan picked up two hits apiece. Furnas has posted two hits in all three games this weekend.
Fallon got the Falcons on the board in the second with an RBI double. Later on in the frame, Gaytan followed with an RBI single. After the Broncos pulled within a run in the third, Nathan Rose restored BGSU's two-run advantage with an RBI single into centerfield in the fourth. Rose's big hit drove home the game's decisive run.
COACH HALLOCK QUOTE
"Today we showed we are making progress game to game in certain areas that will allow us to win. The growth from the start of Game 1 to the end of Game 3 was very good. Our defense was solid and we made some really good catches in the outfield with Anthony, Adam and Andy. Our infield play was clean again and that's been a separating factor in a lot of the close games we play. We know when the ball is put in play near our defenders that they are gonna' glove it and play catch. Kyle Gurney was outstanding behind the plate and called a great game. Offensively, we got traffic on the bases and threatened in many of the innings. There were a lot of really good contributions up and down the lineup due to quality at bats and I liked our aggressiveness on the base paths.
"Gage Schenk is a machine. He knew what was at stake today with us being down in the series and showed tremendous leadership. Watching his presence for two-plus hours took us back to his WBL days at Wapakoneta where he was dominant and in complete control of the whole game. He's got the work ethic, consistent mindset and warrior spirit that it takes to consistently succeed in our conference. Will MacLean came on in the ninth and cleaned up the 27th out for us, which was awesome to see. He attacked and was on the offensive with his pitches and because of his approach, he winds up with the save."
