BGSU Scheduled For Tuesday Non-Conference Contest Against Golden Grizzlies

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team will take to the road Tuesday (April 18) for a midweek non-conference contest against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, beginning a five-game road trip. The Falcons are coming off a series win against Eastern Michigan at home this past weekend, taking two of three from the Eagles. BGSU and Oakland are scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. first pitch at Oakland Baseball Field in Rochester, Mich.

Scouting Oakland
Oakland has had an up-and-down last few weeks. The Golden Grizzlies have dropped their last four games, all on the road, being swept by Northern Kentucky and losing to Michigan State. However, before the road trip, Oakland capped a 10-game homestand with a four-game winning streak, including a 35-4 win over Rochester University in the final game of the homestand. On the year, Oakland is 14-21 while being 7-8 in Horizon League play and 6-4 at home. At the plate, senior Ian Cleary leads the way with an average of .336 to go with 11 doubles and 24 RBI.
Against the Golden Grizzlies All Time
Tuesday's meeting will mark the 25th meeting all-time between Bowling Green and Oakland with the Orange and Brown holding an 18-6 advantage in the series. The two teams first met in 1979 with the Falcons sweeping a May 1 doubleheader at home. The Falcons went on to win the first seven meetings between the two. The most recent meeting came last season in Rochester with the Golden Grizzlies escaping with a 3-2, scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth to break the tie. In that game, Isaiah Seidel pitched 3.2 innings and struck out six.

The Falcons are coming off a series win over Eastern Michigan, sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday (April 15) to take two of three from the Eagles. Over the three-game series the Falcons tallied 30 runs. As a team, the Falcons hit .305 over the course of the series with nine doubles, four home runs and 10 stolen bases. Sam Seidel and Kyle Gurney paced the Falcons, going a combined 10-for-19 with 12 runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, five RBI, seven walks and four stolen bases.

Falcon Facts To Follow
- Kyle Gurney has put together an 18-game on-base streak for the Falcons. During the streak, Gurney is batting .415 (27-for-65) with 17 runs scored, 16 walks drawn, 15 RBI, four doubles and four home runs. With 22 walks this season, Gurney needs just five more to set a new career-high for a single season over his time as a Falcon.
- As a team, the Falcons are averaging 1.91 stolen bases per game, which is tied for 31st in the nation. Bowling Green has stolen 61 bases, which is tied for 36th in the country.
- Adding two sacrifice flies to his season total over the weekend, Nathan Archer is now tied for first in the nation with seven sacrifice flies on the year. Archer is also in the midst of a five-game on-base streak.
- Sam Seidel stole four bases during the weekend series, bringing his season total to a team-high 15. Through 29 games, Seidel is averaging 0.52 stolen bases per game, tied for 47th in the nation and third in the conference.
- Seidel is also in the process of an 11-game on-base streak. Over the course of the season, Seidel has reached base in 26 of his 29 games played and in 23 of his 24 games started.
- Over the weekend series, Nathan Rose recorded three doubles for the Falcons. Rose now has 11 on the season, which is tied for seventh in the MAC and leads the team. Rose also recorded seven RBI against Eastern Michigan, now with a team-high and career-high 30 this season.
- Tyler Ross has a five-game hitting streak for the Orange and Brown. During the five games, Ross is batting .353 (6-for-17) with three RBI, two runs scored, two doubles and two walks drawn.
- Gage Schenk will enter the week ranked seventh in the MAC for ERA with a mark of 3.71, fifth in the conference for opposing batting average at .212 and sixth for strikeouts looking with 16.
- As a Falcon, Schenk has recorded 171 strikeouts. He needs just six more to move into the record book and tie Burke Badenhop for 10th in program history.
- Over the last week, Justin Fugitt put together a three-game hitting streak. Over his three games played, Fugitt went 4-for-10 (.400) at the plate with five RBI, three runs scored, a double and a triple.
- Out of the bullpen, freshman Jacob Turner has made six straight appearances without allowing a run. Turner has totaled seven innings of work during the streak, allowing just four hits and six walks while striking out seven.
