BGSU Bats Stay Hot During Series Finale In Memphis

Banjoff Blasts Second Home Run Of Weekend
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team concluded the weekend series against Memphis on Sunday (Feb. 25) with a 13-7 final. The Bowling Green offense jumped out in front with two first inning runs, but Memphis answered with the same result in the bottom half for a 2-2 tie. The tie carried through the third inning, but an eight-run fourth pushed Memphis in front. The Falcons made it interesting, scoring five in the top of the sixth, but Memphis held off the attempt for the 13-7 final.

The Falcons will return to the state of Tennessee next weekend to take on the nationally ranked Tennessee Volunteers as the final weekend series before MAC play begins.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- DJ Newman led off the game with a single through the left side. Sam Seidel laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Newman followed by a Nathan Archer double to left center to score Newman.
- Later in the first, Brady Birchmeier hit his first double as a Falcon, going to right center, to score Archer and put BGSU up 2-0.
- Memphis answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. A single and hit by pitch put two on. Another single followed by a sacrifice fly plated the runs for a 2-2 tie through one inning.
- The second and third innings were quiet. In the fourth, Memphis knocked a grand slam to move in front 6-2. Back-to-back doubles later in the inning added a run before an error scored two more. Another double plated one more for a 10-2 score.
- An RBI single in the fifth extended the Memphis lead to 11-2.
- Seidel led off the sixth inning with a single to right. A fielder's choice put Archer on first instead with one out. Tyler Ross was hit by a pitch to put two on before Birchmeier connected for a single to center, scoring Archer.
- Later in the inning, Leighton Banjoff belted a three-run home run to left, scoring Birchmeier and Ross to cut the lead down to 11-6.
- The Falcons worked to load the bases again with a single for Garret Wright, a pinch hit walk for Caden Parker and a walk to Newman. Seidel drew a third consecutive walk to bring home Wright for an 11-7 score.
- A two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh for Memphis stretched their lead to 13-7.

FALCON STAT FACTS
- During the three-game series in Memphis, the Falcons tallied 29 runs as a team, outsourcing Memphis 29-28 during the series.
- Nathan Archer doubled in the first inning, bringing his hitting streak to four games and his weekend RBI tally to eight. Archer also scored twice, now with seven runs scored this season.
- Brady Birchmeier logged his first multi-hit game of his collegiate career, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
- Leighton Banjoff's sixth inning home run pushed his hitting streak to four games. During that stretch he's batting .429 (6-of-14) with two home runs, six RBI and six runs scored. Banjoff's team-leading three RBI are also a new career-high for him as a Falcon.
- With his single to lead off the game, DJ Newman extended his hitting streak to six games to begin the season.
- Sam Seidel has reached base in all six of BGSU's games this season, including drawing at least one walk in five straight and seven total walks so far this year.
- Owen Poole made his BGSU debut, coming on in relief during the eighth inning with two outs. Poole recorded a fly out in his only batter faced.
