Falcons Win Streak Closes Due To Ninth Inning Xavier Rally

Archer Blasts Two Home Runs; Seidel, Ganun Go Yard
CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team nearly continued their winning streak, coming up short in the 11-10 final against Xavier on Thursday (March 28). A three-run ninth inning, all from home runs, gave the Musketeers the win. The Falcons loss moves BGSU to 11-9 on the season and closes the winning streak at six-straight for the Orange Brown.
Xavier and Bowling Green went back-and-forth throughout the game with Xavier leading at 1-0 before a 1-1 tie. The Musketeers moved back in front 4-1, but the Falcons continued to chip away with two runs in the second before taking the lead in the fifth. The BGSU lead stretched to 8-4 and then 9-5, but Xavier started to work away at the score, cutting it down to one at 9-8. BGSU added an insurance run in the seventh, but a three-run ninth walked it off for Xavier, 11-10.

The Falcons will continue their series against Xavier on Friday (March 29) with a 2 p.m. first pitch and will conclude on Saturday (March 30) with a 1 p.m. start. BGSU's next MAC series is against Northern Illinois on April 5-7 and their next home game is scheduled for April 10 at 3 p.m. against Purdue Fort Wayne.

Xavier and Bowling Green went back-and-forth throughout the game with Xavier leading at 1-0 before a 1-1 tie. The Musketeers moved back in front 4-1, but the Falcons continued to chip away with two runs in the second before taking the lead in the fifth. The BGSU lead stretched to 8-4 and then 9-5, but Xavier started to work away at the score, cutting it down to one at 9-8. BGSU added an insurance run in the seventh, but a three-run ninth walked it off for Xavier, 11-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A two-out home run in the bottom of the first put Xavier on the board for a 1-0 lead.
- The Falcons quickly responded. Leighton Banjoff began the top of the second with a double down the right field line. After two outs were recorded Gavin Ganun managed to knock a single to left field, scoring Banjoff to tie the game at 1-1.
- A pair of RBI knocks in the second inning put the Musketeers back in front with a 4-1 advantage.
- The BGSU answer again came quickly. Nathan Archer led off the third inning with a solo blast to right field. Sam Seidel followed with a solo shot of his own to right, cutting the deficit down to 4-3.
- After a scoreless fourth, Archer began the fifth inning with a double off the base of the left center wall. Seidel followed again, knocking a single to left center to score Archer and tie the game.
- Later in the fifth, Banjoff singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. Jack Krause stepped in and ripped a double into the right center gap, scoring Banjoff to give BGSU a 5-4 lead.
- After Krause's double, TJ Takats was hit by a pitch to put two on. Ganun made it count with a three-run home run to left field to extend the Bowling Green lead to 8-4.
- Xavier began the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to cut into the score, 8-5.
- Archer got the run back for the Falcons in the sixth inning with a solo home run, his second of the day, to push the lead to 9-5.
- The Musketeers hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead down to 9-8.
- In the seventh, Krause legged out an infield single followed by walks to Takats and Ganun to load the bases with one out and prompt a pitching change. David Silva stepped in and delivered his third hit of the day to score Krause for a 10-8 lead.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Xavier hit a home run for a 10-9 score before a two-run home run walked it off for the 11-10 final.

- Sam Seidel extended his hitting and on-base streaks with a home run in the third inning, his fourth of the season, with both streaks leading the team. Seidel has hit in nine straight games for the Falcons and reached in all 19 games he's played in this season. Going back to last season, Seidel has now reached in 30 straight games for the Orange and Brown.
- Nathan Archer hit two home runs for the Falcons in the game, his second multiple-home run game of the season. Archer is now tied for the team lead with six home runs on the season after leading BGSU in the stat a season ago with nine.
- Knocking an RBI single in the second inning, Gavin Ganun continued his hitting streak, now at seven games, the second-longest active streak for BGSU. Ganun later homered in the fifth inning, his fifth of the season.
- Jack Krause doubled in the fifth inning to stretch his on-base streak to 11 games. TJ Takats was hit by a pitch in the following at-bat to push his on-base streak to 11 as well. Krause and Takats are tied for third for the longest on-base streak on the roster.
- DJ Newman reached with a single in the top of the eighth to push his hitting streak to six games, the third-longest active streak for the Falcons.
- Leighton Banjoff's double in the second inning stretched his on-base streak to seven games and marked his second double of the season, both coming in the last week.
- David Silva doubled in the third inning for his first multiple-base hit as a Falcon. He ended with three hits in the game for his first multiple-hit game as a Falcon.
