Takats Blasts Grand Slam In Battle With Buckeyes

Eighth-Inning Rally Pushes OSU Past BGSU
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team kept it close in Columbus on Tuesday (April 9) against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Falcons utilized a four-run sixth inning off a TJ Takats grand slam to jump in front 4-3. Bowling Green held the lead through the seventh, but a three-run inning for Ohio State in the bottom of the eighth brought the score to the 6-4 final in favor of OSU.

BGSU will be back at home on Wednesday (April 10) to host Purdue Fort Wayne for a 3 p.m. start. The game against the Mastodons will be the first of nine straight home games for the Falcons, including hosting Central Michigan this weekend (April 12-14).

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Falcons and Buckeyes played two scoreless innings to start the game. In the bottom of the third, Ohio State drew a walk and moved up to second on a wild pitch. A double to the right field wall, marking the first OSU hit of the day, brought home the first run of the game for a 1-0 Ohio State lead.
- Another RBI double later in the third, this time scoring two, stretched the Ohio State lead to 3-0.
- The Falcons assembled a two-out rally in the top of the sixth. Consecutive walks to DJ Newman, Jack Krause and Leighton Banjoff loaded the bases to set up an opposite field grand slam off the bat of TJ Takats to push the Falcons in front 4-3.
- In the bottom of the eighth with runners at the corners and one out, a fielder's choice scored one for Ohio State to tie the game at 4-4.
- In the next at-bat, a two-run home run pushed Ohio State back to a 6-4 lead.

FALCON STAT FACTS
- A hit in the second inning by TJ Takats, the first of the game, pushed Takats' on-base streak to 16 games. Takats went on to belt a grand slam in the sixth inning, the second BGSU grand slam of the season and Takats' first collegiate home run on the stat sheet. He homered against Oakland, but the game is currently suspended with stats not official until the game concludes.
- Sam Seidel drew a walk in the third inning to continue his on-base streak, now at 25 games this season, accounting for each game he's played in, and 36-straight going back to last season.
- Jack Krause registered a walk in the top of the sixth to extend his on-base streak to 17 games for Bowling Green.
- DJ Newman drew a first inning walk to push his on-base streak to five games for the Orange and Brown. Newman later singled in the eighth inning to make his on-base streak a hitting streak. Newman has also scored in all five games as well.
- Nathan Archer singled in the top of the ninth to extend his team-leading hitting streak to eight games.
- Leighton Banjoff drew a pair of walks in the game for the third-straight game. Over the last four games, Banjoff has drawn seven walks.
