BGSU Baseball Sets Program Record For All-MAC Selections; Nine Falcons Combine For 14 Honors

Hallock Named MAC Coach Of The Year; Archer Named MAC Player Of The Year; Wright Named MAC Freshman Of The Year
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced the conference honors for the 2024 baseball season Tuesday morning (May 21). Of those named, BGSU baseball collected 14 recognitions with nine different members of the program being named. Head Coach Kyle Hallock led the list, being named the MAC Coach of the Year. Nathan Archer followed as the MAC Player of the Year and Garrett Wright earned MAC Freshman of the Year.
As a team, BGSU had three players named to the All-MAC First Team, the most since four earned the honor during the 2009 campaign. The Falcons had three players named All-MAC Defensive Team as well, matching the program record set in 2019. In total, Bowling Green had 11 names listed on the All-MAC teams across First Team, Second Team and Defensive Team and eight on the First and Second Teams alone, both program records for a single season.
Head Coach Kyle Hallock: MAC Coach of the Year
Coach Hallock led the Falcons to one of the best regular seasons in program history. The Falcons registered 24 MAC wins, setting the program record, and secured the top seed in the MAC Tournament while appearing in the tournament for the first time since 2015. The outright MAC title is the first for the Falcons since 2009 and the 30-win season is BGSU's first since 2010 and just 15th in program history. As a team, the Falcons set the MAC baseball record for the best start, beginning MAC play 17-0, which ranked second in BGSU Athletics history. Additionally, Hallock oversaw the Bowling Green pitching staff that broke the program record for strikeouts in a season. The team also broke the program record for walks in a single season and maintained the sixth-best offense in the nation with an average of 9.4 runs per game. This is Hallock's first Coach of the Year recognition and the fourth for the program after Danny Schmitz received it in 1994, 1995 and 2009. Hallock is also the first individual in MAC history to be named MAC Player of the Year as a student-athlete and MAC Coach of the Year as a head coach, being the MAC's Pitcher of the Year in 2011 with Kent State.
Nathan Archer, OF: MAC Player of the Year, All-MAC First Team, All-MAC Defensive Team
Nathan Archer led not only the Falcons, but the Mid-American Conference this season on his way to MAC Player of the Year, All-MAC First Team and All-MAC Defensive Team honors. Archer tallied 65 runs, leading the MAC, and 62 RBI, third in the MAC, to become the only MAC player this season to rank inside the top three in the conference for both stats. He added 17 home runs and three triples, joining Miami's Zach MacDonald as the only two players in the MAC with 15+ home runs and 3+ triples. Archer also paced the conference in at-bats with 233, breaking the program record in the process. He filled out the stat sheet by leading the team in hits (72) and doubles (14) while ranking second in slugging percentage (.614). As for the defensive side, Archer finished with the ninth-best fielding percentage in the conference (.993) and logged 149 putouts. Archer is the third Falcon in program history to be named MAC Player of the Year and the first since Nolan Reimold in 2005. This is his first time on the All-MAC First Team, being named Second Team last year, and his second All-MAC Defensive Team honors, earning it last season as well.
Garrett Wright, C: MAC Freshman of the Year, All-MAC First Team, All-MAC Defensive Team
Garrett Wright put together a strong freshmen campaign for the Orange and Brown. At the plate, Wright led the MAC in on-base percentage with a mark of .506 and set the program record for hit-by-pitch in a season with 19, ranking second in the conference. Wright added a .393 batting average, ranking first on the team, second in the MAC and first among freshmen. He also slotted in first among true freshmen in the conference for slugging percentage (.607), resulting in the fourth-best OPS (1.113) in the MAC and first among MAC freshmen. As for in the field, Wright posted a .990 fielding percentage with 271 putouts and caught seven runners stealing, eighth in the MAC. Wright is just the third freshman in program history to earn First Team honors, joining Nathan Rose's 2021 season at third base and DJ Newman last year as a designated hitter. Wright is the program's sixth player to earn Freshman of the Year honors and fourth offensively. DJ Newman was the last to be named, receiving it last year as a pitcher, and Kyle Gurney in 2021 was the last hitter for BGSU. Wright is also just the second BGSU catcher to be named All-MAC Defensive Team and the first since Trey Keegan in 2015.
Sam Seidel, 2B: All-MAC First Team
Sam Seidel earned his first All-MAC honors, being named to the All-MAC First Team for Bowling Green. Seidel was named as a second baseman after playing both middle infield positions for the Falcons this season. During the year, Seidel reached base in 41 of the 42 games he played in and put together a streak of 49 going back to last season. He tied for the team lead in triples with three, tying for third in the MAC, and finished the year second in doubles with 12, tying for 18th in the conference. As for in the field, Seidel registered 87 assists, the second-most on the team.
Nic Good, P: All-MAC Second Team, All-MAC Defensive Team
Nic Good was named to the All-MAC Second Team and All-MAC Defensive Team for the Falcons after earning a MAC Pitcher of the Week recognition during the season on March 11. Among qualified pitchers, Good tied for the MAC lead in both sacrifice flies allowed (1) and triples allowed (1). He registered a 6.34 ERA, leading the team and ranking 18th in the conference among qualified pitchers. Over the year, Good tallied a team-leading five wins, tying for fifth in the conference, and struck out 18 batters looking, a team-high and 15th in the MAC. He also ranked inside the top 10 in the MAC among qualified pitchers for doubles allowed (10, 5th), home runs allowed (7, 7th) and walks allowed (23, 7th). Good is the first pitcher in program history to earn All-MAC Defensive Team honors.
Leighton Banjoff, 3B: All-MAC Second Team
Leighton Banjoff earned All-MAC Second Team honors at third base for BGSU after playing four different positions throughout the season. At the plate, Banjoff registered a .441 on-base percentage, ranking fifth on the team and 11th in the MAC. The mark came in large part to his 40 walks that ranked second on the team, third in the MAC and tied for sixth in program history. Banjoff added 46 RBI, tying for second on the team and 14th in the MAC, while logging 44 runs scored, finishing fourth on the team and 16th in the MAC. For the year across four positions, Banjoff finished with a .966 fielding percentage, ending with just five errors.
Tyler Ross, SS: All-MAC Second Team
Tyler Ross was named All-MAC Second Team for the Falcons after being the MAC Player of the Week twice during the season, both on March 11 and March 25. Over the course of the season, Ross tallied six sacrifice flies for BGSU, leading the team and ranking second in the MAC. At the plate, he hit .331, coming in third on the team and 15th in the conference. He added a .571 slugging percentage, 17th in the MAC, and 1.000 OPS, 14th in the MAC, ranking fourth on the team in both. In the field, Ross tallied a team-leading 99 assists with 81 coming in MAC play, tied for the third-most in the conference. He also helped turn 12 double plays, leading the Falcons and 13th in the MAC.
Jack Krause, OF: All-MAC Second Team
Jack Krause was named All-MAC Second Team for BGSU after being named MAC Player of the Week once this season on March 18. Krause led the MAC in walks drawn with 42, ranking fourth in program history. He was also hit by a pitch 10 times, second on the team, combining for the fifth-best on-base percentage in the MAC and second on the team (.466). Krause added 51 runs scored, second on the team and ninth in the MAC, while stealing a team-high 13 bases. He also belted 11 home runs, second on the team and tied for 13th in the MAC. In the field, Krause threw out five runners from right field and recorded 102 putouts, ranking fifth on the team.
DJ Newman, DH: All-MAC Second Team
Despite missing roughly the final month of the season, DJ Newman earned All-MAC Second Team honors as a designated hitter. Newman posted a .455 on-base percentage, third on the team, and a .664 slugging percentage, leading the team. The two marks ranked seventh and sixth, respectively, in the conference making Newman one of two players in the MAC to rank inside the top seven for both stats, joining Western Michigan's CJ Richmond. Newman added a .371 batting average, second on the team and fifth in the MAC, while maintaining a 1.119 OPS to lead the team and rank third in the conference. Newman added three triples, 10 home runs and 10 stolen bases while scoring 45 times.
UP NEXT
The Falcons will compete in the MAC Tournament later this week as the top seed. BGSU's first game will be on Thursday (May 23) at 2 p.m. with the opponent being the lowest seed to win from the slate of games on Wednesday (May 22).
