Catamounts’ Late Commotion Overcomes Falcons’ Fourth Inning In Friday Loss

Mitta Launches First BGSU Home Run, Salvione Adds Pair Of Doubles
CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team opened the weekend series against Western Carolina Friday night (Feb. 20). The Falcons jumped ahead early on with a three-run fourth inning, including a two-run home run off the bat of Anthony Mitta. However, the Catamounts worked to chip away at the BGSU lead, overcoming the score with two runs in the seventh to take a 4-3 advantage, leading to the eventual final. BGSU and WCU will conclude the series on Saturday (Feb. 21) at 1 p.m. with a doubleheader due to a schedule change.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sam Seidel tallied the first hit of the game with a one-out double off the right field wall, continuing his hot start to the season. Western Carolina later added their first hit with a single to lead off the bottom of the second.
- In the fourth inning, Seidel began with a single to the left side of the infield, beating a shift. He swiped second before scoring on a Brady Birchmeier knock that snuck past the shortstop with an error for a 1-0 lead.
- Anthony Mitta followed Birchmeier with a two-run blast to right field, his first home run of the season to extend the BGSU advantage to 3-0.
- Western Carolina brought their answer in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run. The Catamounts added one in the sixth and a pair in the seventh to move in front with a 4-3 score.

- Sam Seidel stole his fifth base of the season, giving him 41 for his BGSU career. The mark moves Seidel into the top 10 in program history for career steals, now in a three-way tie for ninth.
- Seidel also tallied another two-hit game, his third through four games. He now holds the longest hitting streak on the team with seven games.
- Anthony Mitta contributed his second multi-hit game of the season, including his first home run and his first two RBI with the Orange and Brown.
- Vinny Salvione tallied a pair of doubles in the game for the Falcons, giving him three through the first four games of the season. He's also registered a hit in three of BGSU's four games as well.
