Dustin Carlson joined the BGSU Ice Hockey staff in August 2025 and serves as the Director of Hockey Operations. Carlson joins BGSU from the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League (USHL), where he served as the goaltending coach during the 2023-24 season.Â
Carlson comes to BGSU with a long resume of experience, both as a player and a coach. In college, he played as a goaltender for Ohio State from 2007-2011. His best season came in 2008-09, where he played in 39 games, posting a record of 21-12-3. In that same season, he also posted a 2.5 goals allowed average and a .917 save percentage.Â
Following his collegiate career, Carlson played for a number of teams between the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) and Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL), including the Ontario Reign (ECHL), Toledo Walleye (ECHL) and Fayatteville FireAntz (SPHL).Â
After playing professionally from 2010-2016, Carlson returned to Ohio State, his alma mater, where he served as an assistant coach from 2017-2023. During his coaching tenure at Ohio State, the Buckeyes made three NCAA tournament appearances, and made the NCAA Frozen Four in 2018.Â
Carlson is a native of Forest Lake, Minn. and joins a BGSU staff that has gone through a number of changes in the summer of 2025 including the promotion of Curtis Carr to associate head coach, and the hirings of Matt Nicholson and Jacob Pritchard as assistant coaches.Â
