BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Bowling Green State University hockey was back in action on Saturday night, ready to avenge a 2-1 loss to the Lake Superior Lakers suffered the previous night. Though the momentum swayed back and forth for the first half of the game, the Falcons could not recover from a two-goal deficit, amounting to a 5-2 loss to the Lakers.
Lake Superior scored the game's first goal against Bowling Green for the second consecutive night when John Scrymgeour took advantage of a loose puck out in front of the Bowling Green net. Following a Falcon turnover, LSSU forward Pat Aubry put a slap shot on goal from the far right circle. Junior netminder for the Falcons, Nick Eno, got a blocker on the puck making the first save. With the puck out in front of the BG cage, Scrymgeour scooped up the rock and put it home on a wide open left side of the net.
Bowling Green responded with off of a Laker turnover, freshman forward Nathan Pageau fed senior James Perkin a pass to lead him up the ice along the far side boards. With a LSSU defender closing in on him, Perkin put the brakes on and side-stepped his man to create his own one-on-one opportunity against Laker goaltender Pat Inglis. After entering the left circle in the Laker zone, Perkin wristed a shot pat Inglis to tie the game at one goal, a score that the two teams would take into the first intermission.
The Falcons kept the momentum in their favor by putting five shots on goal in the first six minutes, rivaling the Laker's single shot on goal in that time. With the pressure on the Lakers, the tide turned into the visiting team's favor when two goals were scored out in front of the Falcon net within a minute of one another.
In the ninth minute of the second period Dan Barczuk began a streak of three consecutive LSSU goals after cleaning another loose puck in front of Eno. After Lake Superior assist leader Zac McVoy put a shot on goal from the near-side circle, Barczuk stook in front of the net battling a host of Falcons to get a stick on the puck before he slipped it past Eno.
Before the clock turned into the tenth minute, the Lakers struck again when Rick Schofield received feeds from Ben Power and Will Acton before making Eno miss with a shot finding the back of the net. At this point, Bowling Green decided to change goaltenders after the Lakers had built a 3-1 lead.
Freshman Andrew Hammond hopped back into the net for the first time since Nov. 6 at Ferris State and he kept the Lakers scoreless for the duration of the second period. However just under five minutes into the third period, the Lakers scored their third unanswered goal benefitted from a Zach Trotman missed shot.
The play developed after Perkin was whistled for a cross-checking penalty at 16:34, giving the Lakers their third power play of the evening. After Hammond knocked down Trotman's one-timer from the far side circle, the rebound was immediately tapped home by Nick McParland from just outside the left post. The Lakers now possessed a 4-1 lead with three-quarters of a period remaining.
Senior Tommy Dee trimmed the Laker lead to two by scoring a more traditional goal with teammates David Solway and Jordan Samuels-Thomas helping out on the play. Afte the Falcons took control of the puck in their own zone, the three Falcon led a charge that stretched from coast to coast with the goal being scored by Dee on a one-timer that beat Inglis glove-side coming from the keeper's right side. The score improved to 4-2 with 8:18 remaining, but that would be all the closer the Falcons would get to Lake Superior.
Once again, the Lakers responded with a goal within a minute of the Falcons own score when Dillin Stonehouse scored the game's final goal with seven minutes remaining following a feed from Rick Schofield and Pat Aubrey. Stonehouse received the pass while streaking down the far-side boards and coming into the circle to take his shot and beating Hammond for the Laker's fifth goal of the night. With a 5-2 lead, it was all that was needed to defeat the Falcons on their home ice.
The Falcons now fall to Bowling Green falls to 2-11-2 overall and 2-8-2-2 after the weekend sweep while Lake Superior improves to 8-7-3, 4-6-1-0 with the win. Bowling Green will begin to prepare for a home-and-home series against Michigan State University beginning next Friday with game one at the BGSU Ice Arena beginning at 7:05 p.m.
