The BGSU penalty kill unit kept the Knights' at bay on five power play chances, however, the Brown and Orange were also shut out with at least a man advantage, finishing the night 0-for-4 on the night.
Bowling Green did not capitalize on nearly six-and-a-half minutes of power play time given by the Golden Knights in the first period. Clarkson only committed three penalties in the opening period, but a contact-to-the-head, roughing call on Adam Pawlick began a long stretch for the Falcons to go a man up. BGSU totaled 6:24 of time on the power play, including 1:21 that the Falcons ran a 5-on-3 offense, in the first period alone. They registered three shots on goal and four total shots in that time but remained scoreless.
Though the Falcons struggled offensively in the first period, the Knights' fast, transition attack helped put two early goals on the board. Clarkson's Scott Freeman scored the night's first tally from the far point on a low-lining laser that flew between the legs of Falcon goaltender, Nick Eno (Howell, Mich.). Just under two minutes following the first Golden Knight goal, CU right winger Jake Forley received a long outlet pass in the neutral zone, sped past the remaining BGSU defense and toward their second goal of the evening after the junior flipped the puck over Eno's right shoulder at 13:16.
The Falcons returned to the ice far stronger and with a new energy in the second period. The Brown and Orange returned the favor to Clarkson by given them three power-play opportunities in the middle frame but shut down the Knights each time, including 00:34 of a two-man advantage. Eno was peppered during the second period but saved all ten shots that he faced.
After a scoreless second period, Bowling Green intensified their attack on Clarkson goaltender, Paul Karpowich. The Falcons fired 16 shots on goal against the junior netminder, but failed the find the back of the net.
Clarkson replicated their first period performance with a pair of goal less than two minutes apart in the first four minutes. Both Mike Garlasco and Brandon DeFazio of Clarkson recorded their first goals of the season the increase the lead to 4-0 with time winding down. Aside from Morely scoring his second goal of the season earlier in the contest, a different Knight has scored each of the team's remaining nine goals.
Eno stopped 27 shots for the Falcons in the loss, facing 31 on the night. While defending five CU power plays, he stopped all seven shots on goal rendering the Knights unsuccessful on the man advantage. Across the sheet, Karpowich stopped all 31 shots faced, including 16 in the final period and seven against the BGSU power play.
Bowling Green falls to 0-3-0 (0-2-0-0, CCHA) on the year while Clarkson (2-1-0, 0-0-0) gets their second win of the year, redeeming last year's 4-3 defeat at the Dodge Holiday Classic (Minneapolis, Minn.).
The Falcons will attempt a piece of redemption against the Golden Knights Saturday night at Cheel Arena (Potsdam, N.Y.), beginning at 7:00 p.m. EST. Follow the Falcons in their weekend finale via BGSUFalcons.com for complete coverage.
