THIS WEEK IN FALCON HOCKEY ...
... the Falcons will bounce back from the holiday break and contend in the 2010 Toyota UConn Invitational in their last action of the calendar year. Bowling Green will play Princeton on Wednesday, December 29 at 4:05 p.m. ET at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum (Storrs, Conn.). Depending on the outcome of that game plus the Holy Cross/Connecticut contest, the Falcons will play one of the two remaining teams the very next day at either 4:05 or 7:15 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT ...
... the Ohio State Buckeyes spoiled an early holiday celebration by defeating Bowling Green twice on Dec. 10-11 at the BGSU Ice Arena. Bowling Green took a two-goal lead into the middle part of the third period in their Friday night contest, but failed to hold onto the lead surrendered three unanswered goals and the lead the Buckeyes. James McIntosh (Jr., Holland Landing, Ontario) forced overtime with a power-play goal after the 17-minute mark but that Falcons allowed the game-winning tally just inside the last two minutes in the 4-3 overtime loss. Saturday night the Buckeyes controlled much of the contest and limited Bowling Green's scoring chances, allowing only 13 shots on goal on the night. Ohio State took a 2-0 lead into the third period but the Falcons made the game interesting when Cameron Sinclair (Jr., Windsor, Ontario) halved the lead early in the period. The Buckeyes separated themselves shortly afterward adding two more goals -- one empty-netter -- guiding them to a 4-2 victory.
A BOWLING GREEN CHRISTMAS CAROL
Twer the days just after Christmas and all through the rink, the Falcons were practicing, even Michael Fink (Minnetonka, Minn.). Their presents unwrapped with no lumps of coal, two wins in Storrs, Conn. was surely the goal! With the Tigers of Princeton (8-5-0) serving as their first test (Fri., Dec. 29, 4:05 p.m. ET), the Falcons must then wait to see who they play next (on Sat., Dec. 30, 4:05 / 7:15 p.m. ET). Will the Holy Cross Crusaders (6-7-2) be BG's next pawn, or will it the host institution, the Huskies of UConn? The Toyota UConn Classic, the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum is the sight, 'till then Happy Holidays to all, and to all ... well, you know the rest.
All rhymes aside, the 2010 Toyota UConn Classic (Storrs, Conn.) is the first post-Christmas tournament the Bowling Green Falcons has participated in since the 2007-08 season. The Falcons are currently on a four-game losing streak in post-Christmas tournament games dating back to 2006-07. Their last wins were achieved when BGSU previously visited Storrs, Conn. during the 2005 UConn Classic (Dec. 29-30) in which the Falcons won the tournament with victories over Massachusetts, 3-2, and Connecticut, 9-2.
In tournaments held immediately after the Christmas holiday Bowling Green is 27-30-2, all-time. As mentioned, they have lost their last four games. Since 2000, the Falcons are 3-10-1 in tournaments at this time of the year.
Tracking back to the beginning of the program, the Falcons participating in their first Christmas holiday tournament in just their third year of existence for the 1971 Flint IMA (Flint, Mich.). In that tournament, they went 1-1-0 with an 11-0 shutout win over Windsor and a 4-1 loss to Michigan.
Bowling Green won its first holiday tournament in 1978 when beat Vermont, McGill and Brown in succession by a combined score of 21-8 to take the title of the Old Colony Invitational (Providence, R.I.).
BGSU has won seven total holiday tournament in the program's history including three back-to-back in 1986, 1987 and 1988. A complete recap of the Falcons' post-Christmas tournament titles is listed below:
1978 - Old Colony Invitational (Providence, R.I.)
1983 - Key Bank Tournament (Lake Placid, N.Y.)
** same city where they won the 1983-84 National Championship*
1986 - Syracuse Invitational (Syracuse, N.Y.)
1987 - Dexter Classic (Orono, Maine)
1988 - Syracuse Invitational (Syracuse, N.Y.)
1998 - Bank One Badger Showdown (Milwaukee, Wisc.)
2005 - UConn Classic (Storrs, Conn.)
THE STARTING FIVE - FIVE FACTS ON BGSU HOCKEY
1. The last (and only) time the Falcons have played in Storrs, Conn. was during the 2005-06 season when BGSU played in and won the UConn Classic with wins over UMass (3-2) and UConn (9-2).
2. Bowling Green has an incredible combined winning percentage against the likes of Connecticut, Princeton and Holy Cross. Though BGSU has never played Holy Cross, the Falcons still possess a combined record of 10-1 (.909) against Princeton and UConn, all-time.
3. The Falcons have not played in more than one tournament in a given year since the 2002-03 season when they played in both the Lefty McFadden Invitational (Dayton, Ohio) and the Dodge Holiday Classic (Minneapolis, Minn.). They went a combined 1-3-0 in those tournament games. Earlier this year, BGSU finished second at the RPI Holiday Tournament (Nov. 26-27) after losing to host RPI, 3-2 (OT).
4. In tournament games held immediately after the Christmas holiday, the Falcons have a 27-30-2, all-time. They are currently on a four-game losing streak in such games.
5. BGSU has not played UConn since 2006 but even longer is the lapse of time since the last time the Brown and Orange have played Princeton (2002). No matter which way you slice it, of the 11 games Bowling Green has played against either of these two teams, only one of those games have been played outside the months of December or February -- the last meeting between BG and UConn on Oct. 13 in a Falcon 2-1 overtime win.
