BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- A night removed from taking the number one team in the nation to the brink of defeat, Bowling Green saddled up for the second go-around with the Miami Redhawks on Saturday evening. Emotions ran high for the entire game as the RedHawks put ten goals on the Falcons en route to a 10-2 victory over the Falcons.
The first goal of the game was scored at 2:54 in the opening period when Pat Connors took a pass from the near-side halfboards from Curtis McKenzie and attacked the post just slipping the puck past Andrew Hammond's left pad. The goal came on the RedHawks' first of eight power play chances on the night.
Nearly three minutes later, Reilly Smith tallied his sixth goal of the season to take a 2-0 lead on the Falcons. After breaking away from the pack, Smith went one-on-one with Hammond, faking right then shooting left to beat the freshman stick-side at 6:36, still in the first.
Miami would add two more unanswered goals in the second period before Bowling Green put themselves in the scoring column. Those RedHawk goals were courtesy of Curtis McKenzie, sending a laser through traffic from between the faceoff circles, and Jarod Palmer, scoring his third goal of the weekend.
Bowling Green put their first marker on the scoreboard when on their first power play of the second period, freshman Jordan Samuels-Thomas got out in front of the net and lit the lamp for the tenth time this season. Kyle Page sent a shot on goal and was saved by Connor Knapp. The rebound was kicked out and obtained by James Perkin. With traffic mounting out in front of the net, Perkin slid the puck to Samuels-Thomas who slapped home the opening tally for the Falcons at 11:35 in the second period.
Miami retaliated with five unanswered goal thereafter, but the end of the second period will be most remembered by the action after the whistle. After a Bowling Green player lost footing and slid into Miami goaltender Connor Knapp, each side came to the defense of their respective teammates and ended in ten penalties being assessed at the same time including three disqualifications. Two Bowling Green players, Max Grover and James Perkin, left the ice while Miami's Alden Hirschfeld also was granted an early exit.
After two periods, Miami had a 6-1 lead but did not stop their attack on Bowling Green.
After a Bowling Green penalty early in the third period put the RedHawks on the power play, Joe Hartman took a wrister from the far circle that beat new Falcon goaltender, Nick Eno. Miami added another power-play goal near the mid-way point of the period, this time scored by Brandon Smith, his second of the contest.
With the score 8-1, Miami's Trent Vogelhuber added a short-handed goal at 14:40 before Bowling Green added its second score of the night.
Again on the power-play, Bowling Green set up their attack from inside the Miami zone. Taking passes from fellow freshmen Marc Rodriguez and Nathan Pageau, Ian Ruel stationed himself on the blue line shading toward the near-side faceoff circle. Standing with the puck, Ruel cranked a shot that completed the “all freshman power-play goal” to make the score 9-2 with 2:12 remaining in the contest.
Miami added one more goal to the scoring column with just under two minutes remaining to make the score going into the locker room for the final time, 10-2.
Bowling Green falls to 4-22-4 overall with a conference record of 3-17-4-3. They will prepare themselves for another home series against the University of Notre Dame this coming weekend, Feb. 19-20, at the BGSU Ice Arena. Follow the Falcons through the rest of the season on BGSUFalcons.com
