BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- T.J. Blanton extended his career-long hit streak to 20 games in his second plate appearance of the day, though Saturday afternoon as a whole did not fare well for the Falcons in their 32-10 loss to the Ball State Cardinals. Michael Fahle also hit his first career home run in his first at-bat with the Orange and Brown, a grand slam at that in the Falcons' eight-run ninth inning.
Ball State jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings before Bowling Green scored in three consecutive innings, between the third and fifth innings.
In the bottom of the third, Patrick Martin was hit by a pitch and moved to third base after a sacrifice bunt and a ground out. With Martin on third, Mark Galvin hit a double down the left field line to bring it to a 5-1 game.
Ball State scored 18 runs between the fourth and sixth frames, while Bowling Green chipped away with three more runs in that span of time.
After a seven-run top of the fourth inning, Bowling Green added another run in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Dennis Vaughn. After Derek Spencer doubled to right field and Jon Berti followed with a single, putting runners at the corners, Vaughn flied out to left field, deep enough to score Spencer.
In the bottom of the fifth, Galvin and Logan Meisler hit back-to-back doubles, Meisler's scoring Galvin from second. Blanton then singled to put runners on the corners, setting the plate for Galvin once again. Galvin grounded the ball back to BSU pitcher Cal Bowling but his throw to second base in the attempted 1-6-3 double play pulled shortstop Mitch Widau off of the bag. With everybody safe, Meisler crossed the plate for the Falcons' fourth run of the game.
After Ball State scored six runs in the top of the ninth, Bowling Green answered back with six of their own in the home half. The inning was highlighted with freshman catcher Michael Fahle and his first collegiate at-bat resulting in a grand slam to the deepest part of Warren Steller Field. Justin Warrington of the Cardinals took the hill for the ninth. After the bases were loaded and one run scored on two singles, a walk and a Cardinal error Fahle took the plate and added four more run, blasting a 2-1 outside fastball to deep center field that hit the newly installed batter's eye beyond the 400-foot marker.
After an additional run was plated on a RBI double by Ryan Schlater, the Falcons fell to the Cardinals by a final score of 32-10.
With the loss, Bowling Green dropped to 8-17-1 with a conference mark of 2-6 while Ball State improved to 13-16, 6-1 in Mid-American Conference play. Freshman Michael Frank (1-2) took the loss after pitching three innings and allowing six runs on five hits and three walks.
#T.J. Blanton# extended his hitting streak to 20 games with a fifth inning single through the left side and finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI. Logan Meisler also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored once. Twelve different Falcons recorded at least one hit from the plate Saturday, after totaling ten runs on 14 hits for the day.
