BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Reigning MAC Pitcher of the Week Kevin Leady paced the Falcons with seven strong innings of three-hit baseball in his second straight winning decision with the Falcons' 9-3 win over the Ball State Cardinals on Sunday afternoon. Contributing on the offensive side of the ball, #T.J. Blanton# was one of two BGSU players to sport a pair of hits and extended his active hitting streak to 21 consecutive games.
Though the senior right-hander allowed two runs in the opening frame, Leady (4-1) retired 14 straight batters between the last out of the first inning and the fifth inning before harmlessly walking a Cardinal hitter to open up the sixth. Eight of those 14 straight retired batters were via ground out and three by strikeout. After allowing two hits and two runs in the first inning, Leady allowed only one hit, that in his last inning of work, and no runs for the duration of the game. He finished his line with seven innings pitched, three hits, seven strikeouts and three walks.
Down two runs in the fifth inning, Bowling Green answered with five runs, all scored with two outs. With the bases loaded following a pair of singles from Dennis Vaughn and Tyler Elkins plus a walk to Matthew Pitzulo, Ball State starting pitcher and team standout Kolbrin Vitek (1-3) walked home the Falcons' first run when Logan Meisler watched four pitches fly by out of the strike zone. With one swing of the bat on a 0-1 pitch, T.J. Blanton tied the game at two runs with a RBI single that dropped in front of BSU left fielder, Kory Benbow.
With the ballgame tied, Vitek walked his third batter of the inning and the second resulting in a run to break the tie. Mark Galvin drew a five-pitch walk with the bases loaded that gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead. Derek Spencer then continued his hot hitting with a two-RBI single into right center field to score Blanton and Meisler before the inning ended with the lead shifting to the Falcons, 5-2.
Bowling Green added three more runs the very next inning against Ball State reliever Derek Grabner. Again with two outs, the Falcons banged out three runs on four hits and three Cardinal errors. Ryan Schlater pushed a bunt to the right side of the infield that he stretched into a single. Schlater stole second base and advanced to third following an errant throw into centerfield on the steal. After an error by BSU second baseman Tim Issler allowed Schlater to score from third, Blanton singled for the second time and Galvin lined a shot to third base that resulted in a hit, loading the bases. Spencer came to bat and reached based when Cardinal shortstop Mitch Widau booted his ground ball also allowing Meisler to score.
The next batter for the Falcons added one more run to the Falcons lead, making it an 8-2 game. Jon Berti continued the two-out rally and batted in the third Falcon run of the inning when he hit a RBI single to score Blanton. Berti notched his second hit and RBI in the eighth inning on a single to the left side of the infield that scored Spencer after he walked, stole second and advanced on an error. Bowling Green took their 9-2 lead into the ninth before Charles Wooten finished off the game. He allowed one unearned run in the ninth before retiring Widau for the last out.
Leady's performance earned him his team-leading fourth win of the season and has now won three of his last four starts, including his last three decisions. In his last four starts, Leady is 3-0 and has struck out 26 batter, walked nine and possessed a WHIP (walks-and-hits-per inning pitched) of 1.46 over 27.1 innings.
Bowling Green (9-17-1) salvaged the weekend with the win over BSU in the series finale and improves their MAC record to 3-6. The team will prepare for two mid-week, non-conference games before continuing their stint against MAC West opponents next weekend against their arch-rivals, the Toledo Rockets (April 16-18).
Tuesday, Bowling Green will host the Cleveland State Vikings (8-19) of the Horizon League at Warren E. Steller Field for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch. Bowling Green then travels to Ann Arbor, Mich. for a showdown with the Big Ten's Michigan Wolverines on Wednesday at 3:05 p.m.
