KENT, Ohio -- Bowling Green and Kent State began a pivotal three-game series at Schoonover Stadium (Kent, Ohio) and a combined 26 runs were scored. Despite BGSU senior Logan Meisler completing the cycle and the Falcons jumping out to an early ten run lead, the Flashes chipped away at their lead and scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning guiding BGSU to a loss by a final score of 12-14.
Meisler went 4-for-5 on the day with three RBI, completing his cycle in the top of the seventh inning with a solo home run adding to what was a two-run Falcons lead. He led the game off with a triple to deep center field and in the second inning reached base on an infield single. The Port Clinton, Ohio native followed with a RBI double down the left field line in the third. After starting the game off 3-for-3, Meisler grounded out in his fourth at-bat in the fifth before completing the illustrious journey for the cycle in the seventh inning with a solo round-tripper.
Kent State trailed by two runs late in the game before a four-run eighth inning broke it open for the Flashes and completed a comeback that at one point was by as many as ten runs. The Golden Flashes led the eighth off with a pair of singles to put runners on the corners before Nick Bruns was relieved on the mound by Ross Gerdeman (1-2).
On his first batter, Gerdeman committed a balk to allow a run to score and the runner from first to move to second, making the score 12-11 advantage still with the Falcons. A run-scoring single followed to tie the game at 12 before Kent State engaged in some heads up base running that added to the lead. After David Lyon's run scoring single that tied the game, Cory Hindel grounded weakly to the left side of the infield, beating the throw to first. Before the ball was thrown back to Gerdeman, Lyon bolted for third base extending the play. The throw from first to third went wild and as a result, Lyon scored and Hindel went to second on the play. A two-out single added a fourth run in the inning and gave the Flashes a two-run lead heading into the last frame.
The Falcons were retired in order in the top of the ninth to end the game with score, 12-14 in favor of Kent State.
Meisler hit a leadoff triple to center field as the first hitter of the game. Though the Falcons did not bring the senior around the remaining 90 feet, Meisler's hit set the tone for the next two innings before the Falcons knocked home ten runs in the next two frames. His triple was his sixth of the season and tied the Bowling Green all-time mark for triples in a season set by Larry Arndt in the 1982 season.
To begin the second inning Jon Berti doubled to right-center field on the first pitch of the at-bat, again establishing how the inning would progress. With the bases full following a walk to Mark Galvin and a single to left by Clay Duncan, Ryan Schlater hit a one-out single to center field, driving in a run. An infield single by Meisler scored another BGSU run, the second of four the Falcons plated in the inning.
With two outs in the top of the second, senior Dennis Vaughn pulled a single into right center scoring Schlater and Duncan to give the Falcons a quick 4-0 lead.
After Brennan Smith shut down the Golden Flashes for the second straight inning, Bowling Green's offense picked up the early onslaught and kicked in six more runs for a 10-0 lead after three. The Falcons again put runners on the corners early with a walk to Berti and a second single by Duncan. Freshman designated hitter Andrew Kuns took the start and recorded a RBI single to the right side of the infield.
Kent State starting pitcher David Starn was lifted after a 5-0 deficit, though his replacement, Brennan Glass, struggled early against the top of the Falcon lineup. After the sixth BGSU run scored on an error and runners rested at second and third, Meisler hit his second extra-base hit with a double down the left field line to score another run and put the Falcons up 7-0.
Before Glass got out of the inning, the Falcons added to their mountain of runs on a round-tripper from their most reliable offensive weapon, #T.J. Blanton#. It did not take long for the Sandusky, Ohio native to find a pitch he liked and capitalize. On the first pitch he saw from Glass, the senior outfielder blasted a shot over the left field fence, a three run home run that gave the Falcons a ten run lead after three innings.
The Golden Flashes returned fire and chipped away at the Falcon lead over the following three frames, scoring nine times before the Falcons returned to the scoring column. Kent State scored three runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, seeming like it traded places with the Falcons in their scoring tendencies.
Smith surrendered back-to-back singles, and with the aid of a fielding error allowed a run to score before Travis Shaw added a pair of runs on his 14th home run of the season. The Flashes second three-spot came in the bottom of the fourth and again began with two consecutive singles. After a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third, Smith gave up his third single of the inning, scoring both Flash players. With the lead halved, 10-5, a RBI double by Anthony Gallas scored their third run of the inning and brought the Falcon lead to four, after four complete.
Kent State recorded its third straight leadoff hit with a double to begin the bottom of the fifth by Kyle McMillen. Lyon brought him around to touch home on a single to center field, prompting a pitching change for the Falcons. After Charles Wooten came on in relief and Lyon advanced to second on another sacrifice, a RBI double hit by Hindel cut the lead to two. A passed ball with a man on third allowed the ninth KSU run to score, drawing the Falcons lead to one.
Bowling Green and Kent State swapped runs in the sixth after both teams hit a double and promptly followed with RBI singles to make the score 11-10 after six innings.
The Falcons took a 12-10 lead into the game-deciding eighth inning after Meisler completed his cycle with a two-out solo home run to right center field.
The top of the Bowling Green lineup was the most productive for the Falcons. Meisler, Blanton and Dennis Vaughn in the one through three spots went a combined 7-for-15 and accounted for eight RBI and four runs scored. Between Berti, Galvin and Duncan the trio combined for five hits in 13 at-bats and five runs scored. Blanton now has a ten game hitting streak.
Despite the loss, Bowling Green (24-20-1) still shares a piece of the lead in the MAC East standings now that both they and Kent State (30-21) both have a 14-8 conference mark. Game two will give one team a definite lead in the MAC East after BGSU and KSU return to Schoonover Stadium for a 3:00 p.m. ET first pitch.
The teams will turn back the clock and dawn their vintage uniforms from each team's golden years. Photo galleries will be provided to show off the team's uniforms after the game has concluded.
