Bowling Green, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University baseball team jumped out to a 7-1 lead and held off a late Buffalo rally to post a 10-8 win in Thursday's series opener against the Bulls. The win keeps the Falcons in position to win the Mid-American Conference East Division on the final weekend of regular season play.
T.J. Blanton hit his team leading 14th home run of the year and Dennis Vaughn and Ryan Schlater hit homers as well to provide enough offense in a strong start on the mound from Brennan Smith.
Smith struggled with control in the first inning, issuing a pair of walks and a two-out single from Adam Skonieczki put the Bulls on top 1-0. But Smith quickly settled down, retired nine consecutive batters, and did not give up another hit until the fifth inning. That hit in the fifth was a three-run homer but Bowling Green had put seven runs on the board by that point.
Vaughn's first-inning homer gave the Falcons a 2-1 lead and Blanton's three-run blast in the second capped a five-run outburst that made it 7-1. After Buffalo cut the lead to three in the fifth inning, Smith settled down once more and allowed Bowling Green to build the lead again.
Schlater led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run and Matthew Pitzulo hit a two-run double in the seventh to make it 10-4. Buffalo rallied with four runs in the ninth but Charlie Karstedt popped up to end the game representing the tie run at the plate.
Smith went seven innings, allowing three hits and three walks. He struck out five batters and looked dominating for much of the contest. Buffalo starter Chaz Mye, on the other hand, allowed eight earned runs over six innings, giving up 11 hits, to take the loss.
Buffalo falls to 23-27 overall and 9-16 in MAC play with the loss while Bowling Green improves to 26-21-1 overall and 16-9 in league play. The two teams will hit the diamond again Friday with a 1 p.m. scheduled first-pitch.
