BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Bowling Green's offense which scored seven time in the first inning was complemented by a strong eight-inning outing from starting pitcher Kevin Leady in the Falcons' 13-7 win against the University at Buffalo Friday afternoon. The Falcons cranked out four home runs during the game, two by senior Dennis Vaughn. Though a three-run first inning by the Bulls put the Falcons in an early hole, the team responded without haste more than doubling Buffalo in their first at-bat. Not until the order came around to the five-spot did the Bulls retire any Falcon batter, but even after a double play was turned the Brown and Orange still managed to put four more runs across the plate with two out.
Vaughn tied the game with his first swing of the ballgame with a three-run blast, going opposite field over the left field fence. On a 1-0 pitch, UB starting pitcher Pierre Miville-Dechenes hung the next offering over the plate and the senior from Kirtland, Ohio took advantage of the pitch and hit the ball into what would become the power-alley for the game.
With the game tied at three early, Matthew Pitzulo (Poland, Ohio) sounded the horns at Warren Steller Field with a three-run bomb of his own, again to left field. The Falcons' second three-run homer of the inning doubled the Bulls up, 6-3, before a #T.J. Blanton# doubled scored the seventh run of the opening inning put the Falcons up by four.
A sacrifice fly by Mark Galvin added another run in the second inning to give the Falcons an 8-3 lead, but the Bulls did not want to be left out of the run-scoring party for long. The visitors added two more runs in the top of the third to make it a game and held the Falcons at bay offensively until the sixth.
The Bulls added their sixth run in the same frame, right before the Falcons went back to the box with a mission to put this one away.
Vaughn blasted his second home run of the day in the home half of the sixth to add to the Falcon lead. Blanton hit his second double with one out in the inning and was followed by his fellow senior's follow up rocket that twisted and turned Bull outfielder David Neff. With his head looking up there was nowhere else to go and nothing more to do than to watch the ball sail over the left field fence for Vaughn's second opposite-field home run of the day. The blast gave the Falcons a 10-6 lead, but they did not finish scoring there.
Derek Spencer joined his teammates in the homerun parade following Vaughn's eighth of the season with his 11th home run of the year. The home run marked the second time this month the Falcons went back-to-back with homeruns, each time involving Spencer. The last time this occasion occurred was on May 2nd against the Miami RedHawks when Spencer and Galvin went deep one after the other. It was also Vaughn's second multi-homerun game of the season. The other game he had two homeruns was on the same day he and Spencer went back-to-back, May 2nd of this year.
After six innings of power hitting and establishing a 12-6 lead over the Bulls, Leady continued to do work on the Buffalo lineup. After allowing five runs in the first three innings, the senior from Luckey, Ohio settled down and allowed only two hits and one additional base runner on an error in the field for the rest of his outing. The two hits were both solo homeruns.
At one point beginning in the third inning, Leady sat down eight straight Bull hitters, including two straight 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth. He finished with five strikeouts over eight innings of work, allowed seven runs on nine hits and only walked one batter. Leady (8-2) earned his eighth win of the season putting him among the top-ten in BGSU history for wins in a single season, now tied with six others before him for eighth place in the category. The Falcons have now had a pitcher win eight games three seasons in a row after Nick Cantrell accomplished the feat in 2008 and Brennan Smith last season.
The two teams swapped runs in the eighth inning before Ross Gerdeman pitched a perfect ninth inning; three-up, three Bulls down.
The Falcons (27-21-1) remain tied with the Kent State Golden Flashes for the top spot in the Mid-American Conference East division sporting a 17-9 conference record. The final day of the season will be determinant to whether BGSU can take the MAC East outright or take a share of the title with KSU, with a Falcon win on Saturday. In the meantime, Buffalo (23-28, 9-17) is officially eliminated from entry into the MAC tournament with their loss to Bowling Green.
Bowling Green's seeding for next week's conference tournament is still in flux and is dependent on both their performance and the performances of those around them. With a BGSU win and losses from Toledo and Kent State, the Falcons could be awarded the second seed in the tournament. If both Kent State and BGSU win with a Toledo loss, the Falcons would be given the fourth seed in the tournament. Should Ball State and Kent State win on Sunday, regardless what Bowling Green does they will earn the fifth seed.
The Brown and Orange will close the 2010 regular season while recognizing the senior class prior to the first pitch. Nine seniors will lace up their cleats for the final time at Warren Steller Field including Mark Galvin, Dennis Vaughn, Richie O'Brien, David Borcherdt, Brandon McFarland, #T.J. Blanton#, Logan Meisler, Kevin Leady and Derek Spencer. The senior class has decided to go out wearing the throwback uniforms first dawns against Kent State last Saturday afternoon for the home crowd to see for themselves. First pitch will be thrown at 1:05 p.m. ET.
