PREVIEWING CHILLICOTHE
This year's Mid-American Conference Tournament will be held at Veterans Administration (VA) Memorial Stadium (Chillicothe, Ohio), home of the Chillicothe Paints of the Prospect League. With Bowling Green and Kent State both sweeping the competition this past weekend, Bowling Green falls into the fifth seed for the tournament. They are set to play fourth seed Ball State after the Cardinals lost in walk-off fashion to Toledo on Sunday. The tournament is in a double elimination format. Should BGSU win Wednesday, they will play on Thursday at 4 p.m. against the winner of Central Michigan/Ohio. Should BGSU lose Wednesday, they will play Thursday at 12:30 p.m. against the loser of the above mentioned game. BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK!!
For the first time in Falcon baseball history, the program has seen back-to-back-to-back championships in the MAC East division. The Falcons clinched a share of the division title (sharing with Kent State) after sweeping the Buffalo Bulls and keeping pace with the Golden Flashes, who swept Akron this past weekend. In 1998=99 and 2001-02 the Falcons reeled in two consecutive MAC-East titles (or a share of the title).
WAYS TO COVER BOWLING GREEN
Keep track of the team and their trip to Chillicothe, Ohio from your computer if you can't make the trip yourself. Both the Mid-American Conference website <www.mac-sports.com> and BGSUFalcons.com will provide LIVE STATS for all BGSU games. The MAC will provide video and audio coverage for a nominal fee through the ALL-MACCESS package, found on their website. An internet-only radio broadcast will be provided through BGSUFalcons.com at no charge. You can also follow the Falcons through Facebook, Twitter (both through the MAC and BGSU Athletics) and also receive periodic text message updates (sign up through BGSUFalcons.com). A day-by-day blog will also be kept, featuring video and audio footage from players and coaches from Chillicothe, Ohio via BGSUFalcons.com.
THE SERIES VS. BALL STATE
Bowling Green will meet with Ball State University this weekend in a pairing that features last year's East and West Conference regular season champions. The all-time series between the Falcons and Cardinals favors BGSU, 53-44-2. Earlier this season the Cardinals gave Bowling Green its worst defeat of the season, a 32-10 loss. The Falcons salvaged a sweep by beginning the team turnaround with a 9-3 victory the next day against pitcher and MAC Player of the Year Candidate, Kolbrin Vitek.
WALK IT OFF!
As if the thrill of winning at least a share of the MAC East title and celebrating Senior Day weren't enough on Saturday (5/23), the way in which the Falcons did it put the icing on the cake. In heroic fashion, BGSU senior third baseman Derek Spencer walked up to the plate to lead off the bottom of the 9th inning and then with one swing of the bat on the inning's first pitch he led the Falcons to a walk-off win over the Buffalo Bulls, 9-8. Spencer took a high heater and lined it straight over the right field fence for a game-winning home run that clicnhed the title and capped the senior's last home game at Steller Field off with a bang. The win signals the second walk-off victory for the Falcons this year. The last time they had done so was against Cleveland State on April 13, when the Brown and Orange won on a game-winning double, 6-5.
FALCONS TO SHAKE UP ROTATION FOR TOURNY
In a move to better prepare the Falcons for the MAC Tournament, head coach Danny Schmitz decided to move senior SP Kevin Leady into the day two starting role against Buffalo, replacing freshman Michael Frank. Day one starter Brennan Smith and Leady both won their respective starts this weekend and it also gave a chance for the Falcons to give another freshman valuable experience in his first career start against a conference opponent. Cody Apthorpe took to the hill in game three against UB and tossed four strong innings, allowing only three hits and three runs (two earned) before exiting with a blister on his throwing hand. Apthorpe is now expected to be the Falcons' third starter or a key long-reliever going into this week's MAC Tournament.
MOVIN' ON UP IN CAREER WINS
Last season, head coach Danny Schmitz earned his 500th overall win in his career. On March 19, he led a team out onto the field for the 1,000th time and brought home a 'W' in an 11-9 win over Eastern Kentucky. After a trio of wins against OU between April 23-25 Schmitz has made the jump to third all-time in wins among MAC coaches. In the series finale win against the Bobcats, he earned his 535th overall win to pass Stan Sanders (534, Toledo) for third place in the category. Just this psat weekend against Akron, Schmitz surpassed Dean Kreiner (CMU, 1985-98) for fourth all-time for MAC coaches in conference wins (283).
