January 14, 2011 | Ice Hockey
OXFORD, Ohio -- The return to the Goggin Ice Center (Oxford, Ohio) for coaches Chris Bergeron and Barry Schutte was spoiled by a 5-1 loss to their former team, the No. 12/12 Miami RedHawks on Friday night. The RedHawks took control of the contest early with two early goals in the first period and never looked back, applying physical and aggressive play against the Falcons in the weekend opener.

Miami started the fireworks at the Goggin Ice Center turning in their third short-handed goal of the season turning a Falcon turnover into the game's opening goal. While skating through the neutral zone, Miami defenseman Steven Spinell knocked the puck free and sent a long-distance pass up the ice to Reilly Smith who had slipped behind the BGSU power play unit. Smith took the puck hard to the net and went one-on-one with Falcon goaltender Nick Eno (Sr., Howell, Mich.). Smith's shot from just outside the crease went five-hole on Eno and put the 'Hawks up on the Falcons, 1-0, at 10:42 in the first period. The goal was Smith's 14th of the season.
The RedHawks doubled up their lead nearly five minutes later after killing off a Bowling Green power play. Just seconds after Miami came back to full strength the combination of Chris Wideman and Andy Miele teamed up to find frontliner Curtis McKenzie for their second goal. After sending the puck up the ice from inside the BGSU zone, McKenzie took a shot from inside the near faceoff circle and beat Eno high, glove side for his 14th goal of the season. The marker put the RedHawks up two goals after the first period.
The physical play continued into the second period of play with both hard hits and hard takes to the net. Miami added a third goal at 5:27 of the middle frame when a costly turnover deep in the BG defensive zone led to a second Miami short-handed goal. Playing the puck behind the Falcon cage, Andy Miele caused a turnover and immediately passed the puck to teammate Alden Hirschfeld waiting in the slot. Hirschfeld's quick wrist shot beat Eno glove side to extend the lead to 3-0, Miami.
Later in the same period Ryan Viselli (Fr., Toronto, Ontario) was on the wrong end of a hit by Andy Meile and Joe Hartman into some very stiff boards. Meile's hit sent Viselli to the ground and a small scuffle to ensue in his defense, ending in the freshman forward to be carted off of the ice on a stretcher. A Miami power play resulted after all was said and done but Viselli's condition was of greater concern than the play on the ice. After giving the thumbs up on the way out of the gate, his status was upgraded to stable with lingering neck pain. He has been released from the hospital and has returned to the team.
The RedHawks did not let off the gas in the third period, adding two more goals to the scoreboard. Pat Cannone scored his ninth goal of the season just 54 seconds into the third period after a penalty was called on Bowling Green to open the period. Assists were awarded to Meile and MU captain, Carter Camper. Former Falcon Patrick Tiesling scored his first collegiate goal at 6:13 of the third period while on the power play.
Bowling Green's lone goal was scored by Bobby Shea (So., Harrison Township, Mich.) at 14:01 in the third period. The goal was Shea's first goal of his career and comes in his fourth game played at the forward position since making the position change from defense earlier this year. Jerry Freismuth notched the assist on the play, his third of the year, finding Shea camped in the slot ready for the goal-scoring wrist shot.
Nick Eno finished the night with 23 saves on the night on 28 shot attempts taken against him. His counterpart, Cody Reichard finished with a 19 save performance. Bowling Green had its consecutive penalty kill streak snapped at 20 - a new season high - with Tiesling's goal. Bowling Green was shut out on nine power play chances on the night.
Friday night's game was the first time Bergeron and Schutte had returned in competition on the ice after their hire to the BGSU staff. Bowling Green (7-16-2, 2-13-2-0 CCHA) and Miami (12-8-3, 9-6-2-1 CCHA) will return to the ice on Saturday night for the final rematch between these two teams as the Falcons attempt to avoid the season sweep. Start time is set for 7:05 p.m. ET at The Goggin Ice Center. The game can be followed on BGSUFalcons.com through the live audio feed, live stats or video (provided by Miami All-Access). The game can also be heard on the radio on 88.1 WBGU-FM, the flagship home of Falcon hockey. Television coverage will be provided to Time Warner Cable customers that receive the Ohio News Network (ONN), channel 362.
