The Lakers owned the first period, outshooting the Falcons 16-4 in the frame. Lake Superior scored on their first shot of the contest, beating junior Andrew Hammond on a long shot from the point. Lake Superior defenseman Kyle Haines' goal marked the end of Hammond's scoreless streak, which reached an incredible 130:17. Hammond's streak fell short of the Bowling Green record held by Brian Stankiewicz, who recorded a scoreless streak of 154:43, during the 1977-78 campaign.
The Lakers scored again during a 5-3 advantage, giving Lake Superior State a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
Lake Superior outshot the Falcons again in the second frame 12-8, controlling a large bit of the action. The Falcons were unable to convert on two power-play opportunities in the period, while the Lakers failed to convert on one.
The Falcons responded in the third period, scoring an even strength goal at the 9:57 mark, to cut the Lake Superior lead to one. Freshman Marcus Perrier knocked home a loose puck in front during a scramble at the top of the crease for his first career goal. The goal gives the Ontario native his third point of the season, the most among Bowling Green defenseman.
The Lakers came right back however, and scored a goal with 1:34 remaining in the game. The Falcons would pull Hammond in favor of an extra attacker for the first time this season, leaving the net vulnerable. Lake Superior would make BG pay, adding an empty net goal to ice the win for the Lakers, and give Bowling Green their first loss of the season.
The Falcons allowed the first goal of the game for only the second time this young season; the only other time occurring earlier in the year against UConn in a 4-4 tie.
Freshman Dan DeSalvo and sophomore Camden Wojtala assisted on the Perrier tally, extending both of their point streaks to five and three games respectively. Wojtala's assist gives him the team lead in points, putting him at seven on the year.
The Falcons are back in action this coming weekend in a home series against nationally ranked Notre Dame. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday night.
