Game Notes*
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team went 1-1-0 over the weekend in their first CCHA action of the year. The Falcons won the opening game 1-0 against Lake Superior State, behind stellar defense and goaltending. Junior goaltender Andrew Hammond shutout the Lakers, stopping all 19 shots he faced. Freshman Adam Berkle scored the lone goal of the evening mid-way through the second period on the power play. The goal marked the first of Berkle's career, and his second point of the year. The win marked the Falcons first win over a ranked opponent since their victory over Notre Dame last November.
Saturday night marked the first loss of the year for Bowling Green, as the Lakers scored four goals on the Falcons, including an empty netter with 12 seconds remaining. Defenseman Marcus Perrier scored his first career goal in the loss, giving him three points on the year, and most among BG defensemen. The split against nationally-ranked Lake Superior State puts the Falcons at 4-1-1 overall, and 1-1-0 in CCHA play.
The Last Time
The Falcons struggled against the Irish last season, going 1-3-0 on the year. Bowling Green's only win of the season against Notre Dame came in their first meeting of the year, a 3-2 victory at home. Marc Rodriguez, Jordan Samuels-Thomas and Camden Wojtala each scored for the Falcons, while goaltender Nick Eno stopped 30 of 32 shots to secure the victory. Notre Dame was ranked eleventh in the country at the time of the Bowling Green win, and marked the Falcons only victory over a ranked opponent last season. The most recent game between BG and Notre Dame ended in a 5-1 victory for the Irish. Cameron Sinclair scored the lone Falcon goal, while goaltender Nick Eno stopped 30 of 35 shots in the loss.
Hammond Continues to Impress
Junior goaltender Andrew Hammond has continued to be the Falcons' most valuable player early on in the year. The British Colombia native has started every game for Bowling Green, leading the CCHA in minutes played with 363:47. Hammond has played in every minute of every contest this season with the exception of Saturday's game against Lake Superior State, in which he was pulled in favor of an extra attacker late in the contest. Hammond's back-to-back shutouts against UAH (10/15/11) and Lake Superior State (10/21/11) marked the first time Bowling Green had accomplished the feat since the 1973-74 season. That season, Bowling Green shutout the University of Guelph with 10-0 and 11-0 wins on their way to a 20 win season.
Carpenter Cools
Freshman Ryan Carpenter started the season on fire, opening the year with a four-game point streak that amassed to a team leading six points. Carpenter cooled over the weekend series against Lake Superior, failing to get on the score sheet in both games. Carpenter's line mates have cooled as well. After a two-point weekend against UAH, sophomore Brett Mohler failed to get on the score sheet at Lake Superior as well. Sophomore Bryce Williamson has failed to tally a point since the Falcons' opening weekend against UConn.
Picking up the Slack
While one line has struggled for the Falcons, another has picked up the slack. Freshman Dan DeSalvo, sophomore Camden Wojtala, and freshman Adam Berkle have combined to score 14 points this season, including five points this past weekend against LSSU. DeSalvo is currently riding a five-game point streak, tallying points in every game this season with the exception of the first game of the year against UConn. Wojtala is currently riding a three-game point streak, holding the team lead in points this season with seven. Wojtala has failed to secure a point in only one game this season (10/14/11 against UAH).
Welcome To Bowling Green
The weekend series against Lake Superior showcased the first career goals for two Falcon newcomers. While Bowling Green was only able to muster two goals in two games against LSSU, both goals marked first career tallies for highly touted Falcon freshmen. Freshman Adam Berkle scored his first career goal, which turned out to be the game-winner, Friday night against LSSU. Defenseman Marcus Perrier tallied his first career goal in Saturday's 4-1 loss. In contrast, senior Cameron Sinclair played in his first two games of the year this past weekend, giving him 63 career games played over his career with the Falcons.
Bowling Green in the National Spotlight
Bowling Green will have an opportunity to showcase the hockey program this coming season with two nationally televised games. The first will be a home game against Notre Dame this coming weekend. The second will be an away contest against Michigan State on Dec. 3, 2011. Both games will be aired on Comcast, while Fox Sports Detroit will most likely carry Falcon playoff action in the first round of the CCHA playoffs.
Looking at Notre Dame
Notre Dame opened the season ranked first in the USCHO Poll, but has since slipped down to the five spot after opening the season 3-2. The Fighting Irish split with Minnesota-Duluth on the road and Ohio State at home before defeating Rensselaer in the grand opening of the Compton Ice Arena. The new facility will serve as the home to ND, replacing the long standing Joyce Center.
The Irish boast two-standout sophomores that have carried the load offensively this season. Anders Lee leads the team in goals (8), while T.J. Tynan leads in assist (9). Both are currently tied for the team lead in points with 11. Lee and Tynan are also currently tied for the CCHA lead in points, as both have accumulated five points in only two games. Lee is a New York Islanders draft pick, while Tynan belongs to the Columbus Blue Jackets organization.
Junior Mike Johnson carries the load for Notre Dame in net, while sophomore Steven Summerhays has contributed as well. Johnson has played in four games this season (three as a starter), and possesses a 2.33 goals-against-average with a .896 save percentage. Summerhays has struggled in his two starts, averaging 4.61 goals-against in 91:03 of work. His saver percentage is currently .821.
Notre Dame carries a strong power play, ranking in the top five of the CCHA with an 18.5 percent conversion rate. The Irish penalty-kill however has struggled, ranking in the bottom three of the CCHA at 81.5 percent.
