BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team dropped their second straight game to Alaska-Fairbanks Saturday night, losing the contest 2-0. The Nanooks registered two power-play goals on the evening, while Alaska senior goaltender Scott Greenham stopped all 16 shots he faced for his second-straight shutout.
The Falcons spent a large portion of the opening period in the penalty box, including a five-minute hitting from behind major penalty on freshman Ryan Carpenter. The penalty resulted in a game misconduct for Carpenter, who leads all Falcons in scoring with 14 points on the year.
Junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped all thirteen shots he faced in the first period, including eleven on the power play.
A second hitting from behind major penalty was called on sophomore Cam Wojtala at the end of the first period, which resulted in his ejection from the game as well. The result of the call was a second five-minute power play for the Nanooks at the start of the second frame.
Alaska was finally able to take advantage of their power-play time at 4:20 of the second period, when junior Adam Henderson scored on a rebound in front of the Bowling Green cage. The goal marked Henderson's first of the season, and gave the Nanooks the 1-0 lead.
Alaska would tally a second power-play goal with just under two minutes remaining in the second period. Sophomore Cody Kunyk tipped in his fifth goal of the season, and seventeenth goal of his career to give the Nanooks the 2-0 lead heading into the second intermission.
The Falcons had several quality chances in the final frame, but were unable to solve Greenham for the remainder of the contest.
The 2-0 loss marks the first time the Falcons have been shut out in back-to-back games since the 2006-07 season. That year, Bowling Green lost 5-0 to Western Michigan (Jan. 6, 2007) at home and 5-0 to Michigan (Jan. 9, 2007) on the road. This weekend also marks the first time in school history that Bowling Green has been shut out in back-to-back games in a CCHA weekend series.
The Falcons committed 11 penalties equaling 44 penalty minutes in the contest, marking the highest for both categories so far this season.
The loss drops the Falcons record to 6-8-2 on the season, with a record of 1-8-1-1 in conference play. The win improves the Nanooks record to 6-8-2 overall, with a record of 3-7-2-0 in CCHA action.
Bowling Green is back in action this weekend on the road against Michigan State. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. on Friday night, and 6:05 p.m. Saturday night.
