Falcons Over The Weekend
The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost 3-0 to Alaska-Fairbanks Friday night, marking the third time this season the Falcons have been held scoreless. Three different players lit the lamp for Alaska, including two Nanook tallies on the power play. Alaska-Fairbank's 21 shots allowed were the most given up by Bowling Green in a period since the Falcon's opening playoff game against Northern Michigan (3/4/11) last season. The Falcons gave up 21 shots in the opening frame of that game as well, which eventually turned into a 6-3 Bowling Green loss.
The Falcons dropped their second straight game to Alaska-Fairbanks Saturday night, losing the contest 2-0. The Nanooks registered two power-play goals on the evening, while Alaska senior goaltender Scott Greenham stopped all 16 shots he faced for his second-straight shutout. The Falcons committed 11 penalties equaling 44 penalty minutes in the contest, marking the highest for both categories so far this season. The loss drops the Falcons record to 6-8-2 on the season, with a record of 1-8-1-1 in conference play. The win improves the Nanooks record to 6-8-2 overall, with a record of 3-7-2-0 in CCHA action.
Zeros On The Board
The 2-0 loss Saturday night marks the first time the Falcons have been shut out in back-to-back games since the 2006-07 season. That year, Bowling Green lost 5-0 to Western Michigan (Jan. 6, 2007) at home and 5-0 to Michigan (Jan. 9, 2007) on the road. This weekend also marks the first time in school history that Bowling Green has been shut out in back-to-back games in a CCHA weekend series.
The Last Time
The Falcons lost both contests to Michigan State last season, dropping both games in East Lansing. Bowling Green was outscored 4-1 in the weekend series, including a 2-0 shutout by Spartan goaltender Drew Palmisano in the Saturday game. Brett Mohler scored the only goal for the Falcons last season against Michigan State.
Hitting The Road
Bowling Green has struggled at home this season, going 3-6-1 at the BGSU Ice Arena. The Falcons have done slightly better on the road, recording an away mark of 3-2-1. This coming weekend at Michigan State will only be the Falcons third CCHA road series. The Falcons have only played two CCHA series on the road thus far, earning a split at Lake Superior State, and recording a loss and a tie/shootout win at Miami.
Hammond Holds Fort
While Alaska senior goaltender Scott Greenham recorded two shutouts over the weekend, junior goaltender Andrew Hammond kept Bowling Green in both games. Hammond stopped 30 of 32 shots Friday night, including 21 shots in the first period alone. Hammond also played well Saturday night, stopping 31 of 33 shots on the night.
Penalty Issues
Saturday night's game against Alaska marked a number of highs for the Falcons in the penalty department this season. The Falcons committed 11 penalties equaling 44 penalty minutes in the contest, marking the highest for both categories so far this year. The Falcons also lost freshman Ryan Carpenter and sophomore Cam Wojtala during the game thanks to game misconduct penalties. Carpenter and Wojtala currently rank one and two in points for Bowling Green this season, recording 14 and 13 points respectively.
Bowling Green in the National Spotlight
Bowling Green will have an opportunity to showcase the hockey program this coming season with two nationally televised games. Bowling Green is 0-1 so far in nationally televised games, losing the first game at home against Notre Dame on Oct. 28, 2011. The second will be an away contest against Michigan State this Saturday.
Power Play Specialist
Sophomores Ryan Viselli and Cam Wojtala have each recorded three goals so far this season. Both have recorded two of those goals on the power play, which ranks them thirteenth in the CCHA in power-play goals.
Looking at the Positive
Currently only two Falcons carry a positive plus/minus mark. Senior Cameron Sinclair leads the team with a +2 mark, while sophomore Cam Wojtala carries a +1. Junior Bobby Shea and sophomore Andrew Wallace each currently carry a -6 mark, which rank last on the team.
Block Heads
Three Falcons currently have 15 blocked shots or more on the season. Freshman Mike Sullivan and sophomore Cam Wojtala each have 15 blocks, while sophomore Jake Sloat leads the team with 16 blocked shots so far. In fact, every single Falcon player has blocked at least one shot so far this season.
Penalty Kills
The Falcons went on the penalty kill 10 times against Alaska Saturday night, killing of eight of 10 UAF chances. Bowling Green's eight successful kills marks the Falcons most successful kills since the opening game of the season, when the brown and orange killed of nine of 10 Connecticut chances.
Walking Wounded
The Falcons lack of offensive production can be attributed to a couple offensive contributors being out of the line up. Junior Marc Rodriguez has yet to play a game this season due to injury. Rodriguez ranked fifth on the team last season with 15 points on the year. Bowling Green has also missed sophomore Brett Mohler, who recorded five points in 12 games this season before leaving the line up due to injury.
Not Many Left
Of the 23 Falcon skaters to play in a game so far, 19 have registered at least one point. Only Max Grover, James McIntosh, Ryan Peltoma and Ted Pletsch have not recorded a point this season.
Looking at Michigan State
Sophomore Lee Reimer has carried the load for the Spartans offensively this season, recording 18 points (6 G, 12 A) on the year. Reimer is currently averaging 1.29 points-per-game, and ranks third in the CCHA in scoring. Sophomore Greg Wolfe has also contributed, recording 14 points on the season, which ranks sixth in the CCHA.
The Spartans have taken a goalie by committee approach, splitting time between senior Drew Palmisano and sophomore Will Yanakeff. Each goalie has started seven games, while Yanakeff has had slightly better numbers. Yanakeff carries a record of 5-2-0 with a 2.44 goals-against-average and a .920 save percentage. Palmisano has recorded the only Spartan shutout this season.
Michigan State's special teams have been middle of the road for the CCHA. Both penalty kill and power play rank around the middle of the pack in the conference. The Spartans have scored the third most goals in the league (47), trailing only Michigan and Ohio State in total goals scored.
