Falcons Drop 6-1 Decision To Western Michigan
December 10, 2011 | Ice Hockey
BOXSCORE
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team dropped a tough game to Western Michigan Saturday night, falling to the Broncos 6-1. Senior James McIntosh scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 20-of-26 shots in the loss.
The Broncos came out on fire in the opening frame, limiting the Falcons to zero shots on goal in the first 14 minutes of the period. Western Michigan opened the scoring just over three minutes into the game, on a deflection in front by junior Trevor Elias. The goal marked the Alberta native's sixth goal of the season, and gave the Broncos the early 1-0 lead.
The Falcons finally broke through Bronco freshman goaltender Frank Slubowski at the 12:27 mark of the second period, on a deflection in front by McIntosh. The game-tying goal marked McIntosh's first of the season, and eighth of his career.
The tie was short lived however, as Western Michigan pulled ahead just over two minutes later on a power-play goal from junior Dane Walters.
Western Michigan tallied another goal at the 16:50 mark of the period, on an even-strength goal from freshman Justin Kovacs. The Michigan native's tip-in goal marked the first of his collegiate career, and put the Western Michigan lead at 3-1.
The Broncos capped of their three-goal scoring spurt with a goal in the final 15 seconds of the second period. Sophomore Dan Dekeyser walked in and ripped a wrist shot past Hammond to push the score to 4-1 in favor of Western Michigan.
The Broncos added two more tallies in the second period, both coming off the stick of Walters. The two-goal effort from Walters in the third period pushed his game total to three on the night, marking his first career hat trick.
The last time Bowling Green allowed a CCHA player (league game) to register a hat trick, was Notre Dame's Calle Ridderwall on Nov. 28, 2009. Ridderwall scored three times in a tie (4-4) between UND and BGSU at the Joyce Center.
The six goals allowed by the Falcons is the most given up so far this season, and marks the first time Bowling Green has allowed six goals in a game since last year's playoff opening loss (6-3) to Northern Michigan ( Mar. 4, 2011).
The loss drops the Falcons' overall record to 6-11-3 on the season, with a record of 1-11-2-1 in CCHA action. The win improves Western Michigan's record to 9-4-5 overall, with a record of 7-4-3-3 in conference play.
The Falcons don't play again until Dec. 30, when they hit the road to play Bemidji State in out of conference action.
