ON DECK ...
Following the Falcons' series with the Vikings they will play a pair of weekday games against familiar foes. In-state Dayton University will drive up route 75 for a Tuesday (March 22) game with BGSU. The Falcons then take to the road for their next four games, including a Wednesday afternoon game at Mount Pleasant, Mich. against the Central Michigan Chippewas. Mid-American Conference play opens next weekend with the Falcons opening up the conference slate with a road trip to DeKalb, Ill. to play the Northern Illinois Huskies thrice.
MID-WEEK MAGIC
The Falcons battled Mother Nature and the Northwestern Ohio Racers earlier this week in the team's first home game of the season. Down 5-2, the Falcons mounted runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings and walked off the field with a 6-5 victory after Matt Vannett drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch while the bases were loaded to force home the winning run. Freshman Andrew Kubuski's two-run home run in the seventh inning sparked the Falcons' offense and began the comeback. Eight BGSU pitchers saw time on the mound. After starter Matt Malewitz allowed five runs in the second inning, the combination of relievers kept the Racers scoreless and to two hits for the duration of the game, en route to a victory.
RUSSMATT RECAP
Bowling Green played six of its eight scheduled games at the Russ Matt. Despite having a doubleheader against Yale washed out, the Falcons managed a 3-3 mark in their remaining games. After dropping their first two games against Xavier and Illinois State, the Falcons won three straight against Lehigh, Mount Saint Mary's and North Dakota State. They fell in their final game of their stay in Winter Haven, Flor. to Air Force, being shut out 6-0 by another flock of Falcons.
Jon Berti led the Falcons with a .524 batting average (11-for-21), one home run, three RBI and two runs scored. Matt Pitzulo racked up eight RBI and went 12-for-26 (.462) over six games.Alex Davison stole a pair of bases. On the mound, Cody Apthorpe went 1-0 in two starts, totaling 10 innings pitched and maintaining a 2.70 ERA. In eight innings of work, Mike Frank allowed only one earned run (1.07 ERA) and struck out a team-high nine batters over three relief apperances.
