Frank Berry (Virginia Beach, Va.) led the Falcons with two of the team's six hits and knocked in the team's lone run with a RBI double in the second inning. Reigning MAC East Player of the Week Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.) had his eight game hit streak ended, going 0-for-1 on the day with two walks and hit by a pitch once.
Freshman Ethan McKenney (Defiance, Ohio) took the start for the Falcons and lasted 3.2 innings before handing the ball off. He allowed five runs on nine hits and struck out one Bronco hitter on 18 batters faced. The bullpen was the highlight of the game for BGSU. Mike Frank (Maumee, Ohio), Cody Apthorpe (Windham, Ohio) and Levi Fisher (Bryan, Ohio) combined for 4.1 innings pitched and surrendered zero runs and only two hits. Frank led the way with 2.1 innings of relief, three strikeouts and allowed two hits. Apthorpe and Fisher coupled for an inning of work per man and no hits allowed between the two hurlers.
Western Michigan (14-15) struck first when Zach Thoma tripled to right center field and crossed the plate when Bronco shortstop Patrick Duncan grounded out to his counterpart across the diamond, Jon Berti.
The Falcons responded by tying the game in the second inning when Frank Berry drove in Clay Duncan (Norwalk, Ohio) with a double into right center field. The tie lasted briefly when WMU took the lead the next inning when Brooks Beilke hit a RBI single for a 2-1 score.
The Broncos tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning on a pair of run scoring singles. Brad Wehrmeyer and Jimmy Martinez were responsible for the RBI hits, giving the Broncos a 5-1 lead that stayed true until game's end.
Bowling Green (9-14) will attempt to redeem the loss with a home game versus Oakland University Wednesday afternoon, scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Warren Steller Field (Bowling Green, Ohio).
