One Big Inning Away; Falcons Dropped by Oakland
April 06, 2011 | Baseball
A five-run fourth inning by OU separated the Grizzlies from the Falcons in BGSU's 7-3 loss.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Again slow to jump start their offense, Bowling Green baseball suffered a second mid-week, non-conference loss on Wednesday afternoon to Oakland University. Had it not been for a five-run fifth inning posted by the Golden Grizzlies, the Falcons may have been on the opposite side of the loss but the hosts wound up falling to OU, 7-3.

Despite trailing by four runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Falcons managed to load the bases and bring their most dangerous hitter to the plate, representing the tying run. Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.) stepped the plate with three runners on and two outs. After taking two pitches and facing a 2-1 count, Berti lifted a deep fly ball into the left center field gap. Racing to the warning track, Oakland left fielder Todd Dunham hunted the ball down and made the catch to end the game.
The Golden Grizzlies broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning after trailing 2-0. Mike Carson, the only OU player in the starting lineup with a home run to his name this season, belted a leadoff home run to left field, cutting the lead in half. After a fielding error and a failed fielder's choice put runners on first and second, Tim Ryan and D.J. Jarrad each hit a RBI single in consecutive at bats to take a 3-2 lead.
The Falcons proceeded to lift Matt Malewitz (Grand Rapids, Mich.) after 3.1 innings of work in favor of freshman Ben Singer (Midland, Mich.). Singer retired his first batter, though it cost the Falcons another run when Ryan scored from third on a ground out to second baseman Logan Walker (Richmond, Va.). He then surrendered a RBI single to Aaron Cieslak, giving the Grizzlies a 5-2 lead. All five runs were charged to Malewitz.
Oakland added another run in their half of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly out in foul grounds down the first base side. Bowling Green returned the favor with a run in the bottom of the seventh, taking advantage of an extra out given by the visitors. Logan Walker legged out an infield single hit deep in the hole to short, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on an error by Oakland shortstop D.J. Jarrad. Ryan Schlater (St. Paris, Ohio) knocked home the third Falcon run with a grounder deep to short, scoring Walker and trimming the OU lead to three runs.
Dan Parsons (Strongsville, Ohio) allowed a run in the top of the ninth when nine-hitter Jake Morton walked and advanced to second on a balk, then to third on a passed ball. He scored on a RBI single by Jarrad, which built the lead to 7-3 in favor of the Golden Grizzlies.
Three BGSU freshman pitchers saw time in the loss. Ben Singer, Chris Miller (Batesville, Ind.) and Levi Fisher (Bryan, Ohio) all pitched an inning of relief, combined for four strikeouts, four hits allowed and one run against. Ross Gerdeman (Fort Jennings, Ohio) pitched a flawless eighth inning before Parsons took the hill. Malewitz (0-1) took the loss, allowing six hits, five runs (two earned) and walking three.
Bowling Green (9-15, 3-3) now gears up to get back into Mid-American Conference play this weekend with a road trip to Ball State. The Cardinals (6-19, 4-2) and Falcons will begin their three-game series on Friday with a 3 p.m. ET with 1 p.m. starts set for Saturday and Sunday.
