Shay Has a Day in Falcon Victory Over Zips

The freshmen combo of Jeremy Shay and Andrew Kubuski combined for five RBI in the BGSU win.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Although Mother Nature forced a relocation of this weekend's series between the Bowling Green Falcons and Akron Zips, the new hosts defended Warren Steller Field and broke a four game losing streak on Friday afternoon. The Zips brought it within a run in the bottom of the ninth inning but Matt Malewitz closed the doors on game one recording the final out of a 6-5 game in a Falcon victory.

Mike Frank (Maumee, Ohio) retired the final out of the seventh inning to get the Falcons out of a jam in an inning which the team surrendered three runs. Taking a 6-4 lead into the final inning, Bowling Green reliever Mike Frank (Maumee, Ohio) surrendered a two-out, solo home run to Akron's Matt Corpora, making it a one-run contest just an out away from a win. Falcon skipper Danny Schmitz then made the call to the bullpen for left-hander Matt Malewitz (Grand Rapids, Mich.).
The redshirt junior got ahead of Akron standout Drew Turocy, 0-2, but walked him to put the tying run on base and the winning run at the plate in the form of Brandon White. White took a 1-1 offering and lined it up the middle but Malewitz put his glove right in the ball's path toward center field, making the stabbing grab to end the game, 6-5. The one-out save was good for Malewitz's second of the season.
Jeremy Shay (Garden City, Mich.) led the Falcons offensively with a 2-for-5 day and three RBI. He drove the first run of the game home, plating Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.) from first base on a double deep into the left field gap. He came back in the fifth inning and blasted a line drive, two-run home run over the right field fence. It was the freshman's second home run of the season and second in his last three games.
Bowling Green posted one run in each of the first three innings while holding the Zips scoreless behind the pitching of starter Cody Apthorpe (Windham, Ohio). He was spotted six runs before he ran into trouble in the sixth inning. After five solid frames of work, Apthorpe had tossed only 47 pitches and retired 23 of the 26 Akron hitters he faced, striking out a pair.
After Shay put the Falcons ahead in the first, freshman Andrew Kubuski (Elyria, Ohio) sent a double into right center field. The two-out, extra-base hit scored Patrick Martin (Oregon, Ohio) from second base who put himself in scoring position after stealing his sixth base of the season.
In the third inning, the Falcons took advantage of a costly error by Zips shortstop Sam Watkins. With Jon Berti on third, Matt Pitzulo (Poland, Ohio) grounded to the shortstop, but Watkins booted the play allowing Berti to score and make it a 3-0 game.
Shay's home run put the Falcons up 5-0, but the Falcons were not finished scoring just yet. Kubuski notched his second RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed senior catcher Ryan Schlater (St. Paris, Ohio) to score and make for a six-run game.
The Falcons were held scoreless for the final three innings but the Zips were ready to get their offense going. Apthorpe's five innings of near-perfect pitching was spoiled in the sixth after he walked nine-hitter Jared Turocy and the top of the order bit into his shutout effort. Matt Corpora doubled to put runners on second and third before Drew Turocy walked to load the bases. Brandon White hit a two-RBI double to put the Zips on the board and Sam Watkins singled through the left side to put up their third run of the inning before Apthorpe was lifted from the game for Mike Frank.
Frank pitched a scoreless seventh inning but allowed runs in the eighth and ninth frames, both on extra-base hits. He finished his day with three innings pitched, allowed three hits, two runs and a walk while striking out one in the setup role.
Bowling Green (16-25, 9-10) and Akron (11-32, 4-15) will reengage on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. from Warren Steller Field (Bowling Green, Ohio). Nick Bruns (3-2, 6.65 ERA) will face off against Alex Loftin (2-8, 5.25 ERA) in a righty-righty, game two match up. The series was originally scheduled to be played in Akron but due to field conditions caused by heavy rains earlier in the week it was mutually agreed upon to be moved to Bowling Green.
