Hearts Break at “The Stell” after Ninth Inning Collapse
May 07, 2011 | Baseball
An Akron three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth ended Saturday's game, 7-6, in walk-off fashion.
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- While the BGSU softball was enjoying a walk-off victory just a few hundred feet away, Falcon baseball entered a walk-off situation of their own on Saturday afternoon. Bowling Green took a 6-4 lead into the ninth inning and sought out another victory over Akron but the Zips' Matt Corpora turned the tide with a three-run home run sending the Falcons to a 7-6 defeat at Warren Steller Field.

Taking a 6-4 lead into the final frame, Ross Gerdeman (Fort Jennings, Ohio) entered his fourth inning of relief work and retired the opening batter. Nine-hitter Jared Turocy singled to right and was followed by James Sheltrown's single up the middle to put two men on base and the winning run at the plate. A call to the bullpen was made to bring in right-handed freshman, Ethan McKenney (Defiance, Ohio). On McKenney's (2-4) second pitch to Zips standout Drew Turocy, the Akron centerfielder sent a deep fly ball into centerfield that cleared the fence and the bases to award the Zips a 7-6 walk-off win.
The Falcons (16-26, 9-11) and Zips (12-32, 5-15) went back and forth through the first six innings of the day's contest. They began by exchanging runs in the second and third innings with Akron drawing first blood via a RBI single by Jason Corzine. Bowling Green's Alex Davison (Grand Ledge, Mich.) began his career day at the plate with a run scoring double down the right field line plating Clay Duncan (Norwalk, Ohio) from second base.
Akron scored twice more in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run from Drew Turocy but again Bowling Green answered back in their next at bat. In the top of the fourth, Duncan collected his second of three singles while knocking in two runs on the play. Ryan Schlater (St. Paris, Ohio) and Patrick Martin (Oregon, Ohio) both scored to tie the game at three runs.
Bowling Green starting pitcher Nick Bruns (St. Henry, Ohio) took the 3-3 tie into the sixth inning having allowed only five hits and striking out five before the start of the frame. He allowed three singles to the four batters he faced next, allowing one run before being relieved for the day. Ross Gerdeman entered the game and retired the next two batters to eliminate the threat and keep within one of the visiting Zips.
Again, BGSU retaliated by scoring the next three runs between the seventh and eighth innings. Akron starter Alex Loftin attempted to go into the seventh inning but ran into Frank Berry (Virginia Beach, Va.) at the top of the Falcon lineup, surrendering a single to the senior captain. That hit ended Loftin's day and forced a change on the hill. Benjamin Danziger entered and walked Davison to put to men on and surrendered a single to Jon Berti (Troy, Mich.). The Falcons took advantage of a throwing error toward first base by Zip second baseman James Sheltrown on an attempted double play turn. Berry scored from third on the hit but the error allowed Davison to score from second base. The miscue cost the Zips two runs and put the Falcons ahead, 5-4.
Davison capped off his highlight day with a third base hit and second RBI on a single to left field in the ninth, scoring an additional insurance run before heading into the decisive ninth inning.
Davison was one of two Falcons with a three-hit performance. The freshman went 3-for-4, two runs scored, two RBI, a walk and a stolen base. Clay Duncan was the second Falcon with three hits in four plate appearances. He too scored twice and had three runs batted in.
The Falcons suffered only their second defeat when leading after eight innings of play in 16 attempts this season. They look to avenge the loss in the series rubber match on Sunday afternoon. The Zips and Falcons bring it back to Warren Steller Field (Bowling Green, Ohio) on Mother's Day for a 1 p.m. first pitch time.
