BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team stunned the CCHA Saturday night, upsetting first place Western Michigan 2-1. Sophomore Cam Wojtala and senior James McIntosh scored for the Falcons, while Andrew Hammond made 28 saves in the win.
Western Michigan scored their lone goal of the contest just 1:21 into the game, netting a power-play goal to take the early lead. Senior Greg Squires took a feed across the slot, and buried his fourth goal of the season, putting the score at 1-0 in favor of the Broncos.
Both goaltenders stood tall for the reminder of the first period, sending The Falcons to the first intermission down 1-0.
The goal drought continued through the second period, as neither team could break through in the middle frame.
The Falcons finally solved Bronco goaltender Frank Slubowski at the 6:10 mark of the third period, on a wrap-around attempt from Wojtala. The tally marked Wojtala's sixth goal of the season, and tied the contest 1-1.
Bowling Green continued to press the Broncos throughout the third period, outshooting Western Michigan 8-7 in the final frame.

McIntosh's goal marks his first tally since the Falcons 6-1 loss to the Broncos Dec. 10 in Kalamazoo, and marks his twentieth career point as a Falcon. Chad Sumsion's assist on the tying goal marks his first point since the Falcons defeated Alabama Huntsville (Oct. 15) 3-0 in Huntsville.
Wojtala is now tied with freshman Ryan Carpenter for second on the team in goals with six on the season. Sophomore Bryce Williamson holds the team lead with seven goals on the season.
Bowling Green's win marks only their third CCHA regulation victory on the season, and second in two weeks. The Falcons defeated Alaska-Fairbanks 3-1 in Fairbanks (Jan. 20) last weekend.
Hammond continues to add to his season win total, securing his eighth victory of the season Saturday night, which is a new career high.
The Falcons 2-1 regulation win Saturday night marks the first time in four games Bowling Green did not go to a shootout at the BGSU Ice Arena.
The win improves Bowling Green's record to 8-15-5 overall, with a record of 3-13-4-3 in CCHA action. The loss drops the Broncos overall record to 13-10-5, with a record of 10-7-3-3 in conference play.
The Falcons are back in action next weekend, traveling to South Bend to take on the Fighting Irish. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m. both nights.
