Falcons Drop 4-3 Decision To Ferris State In OT

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to Ferris State Friday night, falling to the Bulldogs in overtime at the BGSU Ice Arena. Sophomores Dan DeSalvo, Ryan Carpenter and Adam Berkle all scored for the Falcons, while senior Andrew Hammond (1-5-1) stopped 23-of-27 shots in the loss.
The Orange and Brown finally cashed in on the power play, going 1-for-7 with the man advantage to break their eight game power-play goal drought. Ferris State also scored with the man advantage, going 2-for-5 on the power play in the contest.
Bowling Green dominated the opening period of play, outshooting the Bulldogs 10-4. Hammond and Ferris State netminder CJ Motte were perfect in the opening frame, however, keeping the game at 0-0 at the first intermission.
Bulldog Cory Kane broke the goal drought at 6:44 of the second period, scoring a short-handed marker to give Ferris State the 1-0 lead. FSU lit the lamp again in the middle frame, coming off the stick of freshman Kenny Babinski at even strength at 8:54.
With a 2-0 lead heading into the third period, Bulldog Kyle Bonis scored another goal for FSU, coming at the 9:48 mark on the power play.
Down 3-0 the Falcons began their comeback, scoring three-straight goals in regulation to tie the game.
DeSalvo started the scoring for Bowling Green, netting his first goal of the season at 12:03 of the third off an offensive zone draw. The Orange and Brown struck again just under a minute and a half (13:31) later on the power play, thanks to a tip in front by Carpenter to put the score at 3-2.
With just over three minutes remaining in the contest, DeSalvo took a draw to the right of the Bowling Green net. Senior Bobby Shea collected the puck after the faceoff win, and sent a long dump off the glass into the neutral zone. Berkle collected the puck, and sprinted towards the Ferris State goal. Berkle barreled towards the cage, getting a shot off in close to beat Motte and tie the game at 3-3.
Although the Falcons were able to push the game to overtime, Bowling Green's comeback effort fell short. Just 14 seconds into overtime, Bulldog Garret Thompson snuck one past Hammond on the power play, giving Ferris State the 4-3 OT win.
DeSalvo's first goal of the season Friday night snaps a 13-game goal drought dating back to March 11, 2012, in the Falcons series-clinching game against Ferris State in the CCHA Playoffs. Along with his goal, DeSalvo secured two assists in the contest, giving him a season-high three-point night.
The loss drops Bowling Green's overall record to 2-7-3, with a record of 1-4-2-1 in CCHA action. The win pushes Ferris State's record to 5-4-2 overall, including a record of 4-3-0 in conference play.
Both teams take the ice Saturday night in the second game of their two-game set at the BGSU Ice Arena. The puck is set to drop at 7:05.
