Falcons Fall, 6-1, To Michigan State

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to Michigan State in the second game of their home-and-home series, falling to the Spartans, 6-1, at the BGSU Ice Arena Saturday night.
Senior Andrew Hammond started the contest, stopping 12-of-16 shots before being pulled in favor of freshman Tommy Burke. Burke stopped 5-of-7 shots in 29:44 minutes of play. Junior captain Cam Wojtala scored the lone Falcon goal, his third of the season.
Special teams made the difference in the contest, with Michigan State converting on 4-of-7 power plays. Bowling Green was held scoreless with the man advantage for the sixth-straight game, going 0-for-3 on the night.
The Spartans scored the first six goals of the contest, netting three-straight power-play goals through the first and second period. Michigan State sophomore Matt Berry scored the first goal at 8:13 of the first period, followed by junior Lee Reimer at 19:15 and freshman Michael Ferrantino at 8:06 of the second frame.
Michigan State freshman Matt DeBlouw then scored two-straight even-strength tallies, scoring his second and third goals of the season at 10:16 and 19:57 of the middle frame.
Junior Greg Wolfe scored the final Spartan goal of the evening, netting a power-play marker at 8:30 of the third period to give Michigan State the 6-0 lead.
The Falcons finally broke through Spartan netminder Will Yanakeff at 15:21 of the third period, putting the game at 6-1. Freshman Brent Tate collected the puck in the neutral zone, before tipping a pass to Wojtala streaking down the right side. Wojtala cut towards the Spartan net, and fired a wrist shot past Yanakeff to ruin the MSU shutout.
Bowling Green was held scoreless for the remainder of the contest, giving the Spartans a 6-1 win.
Tate's assist on the lone Falcon goal marks the first point of his collegiate career, coming in his first game for the Orange and Brown.
The loss drops Bowling Green to 2-5-2 overall, with a record of 1-2-1-1 in CCHA action. The win improves Michigan State's overall record to 3-4-1, with a record of 2-2-0-0 in conference play.
The Falcons are back in action this Friday, squaring off against defending CCHA Playoff Champion, Western Michigan, in Kalamazoo, Mich. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m.
