The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team defeated Michigan State Friday night, shutting out the Spartans, 1-0, to earn their second win of the season. Sophomore Connor Kucera scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while senior Andrew Hammond stopped 29-of-29 shots in his return between the pipes. Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power play.
The Falcons lost to Michigan State in the second game of their home-and-home series, falling to the Spartans, 6-1, at the BGSU Ice Arena Saturday night. Hammond started the contest, stopping 12-of-16 shots before being pulled in favor of freshman Tommy Burke. Burke stopped 5-of-7 shots in 29:44 minutes of play. Junior captain Cam Wojtala scored the lone Falcon goal, his third of the season.
Welcome Mr. Tate
Freshman Brent Tate's assist on the lone Falcon goal Saturday night marks the first point of his collegiate career, coming in his first game for the Orange and Brown. Tate's point marks the second newcomer to score in their first career game for the Falcons this season, following Dajon Mingo's assist in his first game against Niagara.
Power Play Drought
Bowling Green was held scoreless with the man advantage for the sixth-straight game in Saturday night's 6-1 loss, going 0-for-3 on the night. Bowling Green has not scored a power-play goal in 24-straight opportunities with the man advantage.
Penalty Kill Trouble
The Falcons allowed four power-play goals in their 6-1 loss to Michigan State Saturday night, snapping a five-game streak in which the Falcons held their opponents scoreless on the power play. The four power-play goals allowed is the most of the 2012-13 campaign, trumping the previous high of three power-play goals allowed to Union on Oct. 12. The last time Bowling Green allowed four power-play goals in a game was back on Jan. 15, 2010, in a 6-0 loss to Northern Michigan on the road.
Kucera
Kucera's game-winning tally on Friday marked his first goal of the season, and second of his career. Kucera's last goal came in the second round of the CCHA Playoffs last season, in the Falcons' 4-7 loss to Ferris State (3/10/12).
Hammy Returns
Hammond's shutout victory against Michigan State Friday night marked his first win of the season, and fifth career shutout. Hammond's last shutout came on Oct. 21, 2011, a 1-0 win at Lake Superior last season.
Streak Snapped
Bowling Green's 1-0 win Friday night snapped an eight game winless streak against Michigan State, dating back to Feb. 21, 2009, a 4-0 win at the BGSU Ice Arena. The win marks the Falcons' first victory in East Lansing since the 2006-07 season, a 2-1 win at Munn Ice Arena (Feb. 24, 2007).
Six Deep
The Falcons surrendered six goals Saturday night, their most of the 2012-13 season. Bowling Green allowed six goals or more on two occasions last season, the most recent coming on March 10, in the Falcons' 7-4 loss to Ferris State in the second round of the CCHA Playoffs. That game also marks the last time Andrew Hammond was pulled from a game due to a non-injury.
One Goal Or Less
The Falcons were held to one goal Saturday night, giving them one goal scored in back-to-back games. Bowling Green has scored one goal or less on four different occasions this season. The Falcons were only able to muster 19 shots on goal Saturday night, their lowest total of the season.
Western Michigan Last Season
Bowling Green went 1-2-1 against Western Michigan last season, including a CCHA shootout loss in their first meeting of the season.
-The Falcons tied Western Michigan, 3-3, in their first meeting, overcoming a two-goal deficit with under five minutes to play in the third period. Bobby Shea recorded two goals and an assist on the evening, while goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped 20-of-23 shots in the contest.
-The following night, BG dropped a tough game to WMU, falling to the Broncos, 6-1. Senior James McIntosh scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while Hammond stopped 20-of-26 shots in the loss.
-Bowling Green dropped a 4-1 decision to Western Michigan in their third meeting, thanks to three straight goals from the Broncos in the second period. Senior Cameron Sinclair scored the lone goal for the Falcons, with Hammond stopping 29-of-32 shots in the loss.
-The Falcons stunned the CCHA in their final meeting of the season, upsetting first place Western Michigan, 2-1. Cam Wojtala and McIntosh scored for the Falcons, while Hammond made 28 saves in the win.
Losing In Lawson
The Falcons have struggled against Western Michigan at Lawson Ice Arena in recent years, failing to defeat the Broncos on the road in six-straight games. In that six-game winless span the Falcons and Broncos did battle to a 1-1 tie, with Ryan Viselli's first career goal accounting for the lone Falcon tally. The last Falcon win at Lawson came on Jan. 19, 2008, a 2-1 win in overtime.
Individual Stats
Senior goaltender Andrew Hammond has a career record of 1-3-2 against the Broncos, going along with a 2.77 goals against average and a .903 save percentage. Hammond started every game against WMU last season.
Senior Bobby Shea and junior Andrew Wallace had career numbers against Western Michigan last season. Shea had the best game of his career in their first meeting, scoring a career-high two goals and an assist for a three-point night. Wallace also recorded two assists in the team's first meeting last season, also a career best. Wallace and Shea share the current team lead with four career points against the Broncos.
Preseason Picks
Western Michigan won the CCHA Playoff Title last season, defeating Michigan in the CCHA Finals game. The majority of the team returns this year, as three of the Broncos were named to the Preseason All-CCHA First Team. Forward Chase Balisy, defenseman Dan DeKeyser and goaltender Frank Slubowski all made the cut. Senior Andrew Hammond was the only Falcon to receive attention in the preseason, earning an honorable mention in the preseason poll.
Getting To The Third
Bowling Green has struggled in the first two periods this season, allowing 20 goals as opposed to scoring just 10. The Falcons are dead even in the final frame, scoring six goals, while also allowing six.
Back-To-Back Wins
The Falcons had a chance to win back-to-back games Saturday night, but failed to do so, falling to Michigan State, 6-1. The Falcons have not won back-to-back games since last year's CCHA Playoffs, when they defeated Northern Michigan in back-to-back games to clinch the series, before defeating Ferris State for a three-game winning streak.
Scoring Race
Cam Wojtala's goal Saturday night pushed his season total to three, giving him a tie with Mark Cooper for the team lead. Wojtala ranked third on the team last season, scoring 10 goals in 42 games.
