BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost to No.3 Notre Dame Saturday night, falling to the Fighting Irish by a score of 4-1 at the BGSU Ice Arena. Sophomore Ryan Carpenter scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while senior goaltender Andrew Hammond (2-7-2) turned away 28-of-32 shots in the loss.
Both teams were able to light the lamp on the power play, with the Falcons going 1-for-2 and the Irish going 2-for-3.
The first period opened with little stoppage, as both teams battled back and forth in end-to-end play. Notre Dame took the shot advantage in the opening frame, registering 10 shots on net to the Falcons' five. Despite the fast play, both goalies were perfect in the frame, sending both sides to the locker room tied 0-0.
Just 1:24 into the second period, Notre Dame's Jeff Costello took a hooking penalty, giving Bowling Green the man advantage on the clean ice. It didn't take long for the Falcons to capitalize, scoring the game's first goal at 1:49 of the second period.
Bowling Green worked the puck along the top of the zone, before Dajon Mingo fired a shot from the left circle. Carpenter was waiting in front, tipping home the puck on the power play for his fifth goal of the season.
Notre Dame would answer right back, scoring the equalizer just under two minutes later at even strength. The Irish wrapped the puck down into the Falcon's zone, where Hammond was waiting behind the net to stop it. The puck took an odd bounce off the end boards, ricocheting back into the slot. The puck found Notre Dame's T.J. Tynan in front, giving him an easy goal to tie the contest at 1-1.
The Irish netted a second tally in the middle stanza, thanks to a power-play goal from Brian Rust (11:52) to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Notre Dame added two more goals in the final seven minutes of the third period, giving the Irish a 4-1 lead. UND's Mike Voran scored the third goal of the night for the Irish, coming at the 13:18 mark at even strength. The final Irish goal came on the power play, as defenseman Shayne Taker fired home a shot from the point at 15:14 to secure the Notre Dame win.
Bowling Green is now 3-3-1 when scoring the first goal, and 0-7-2 when allowing a power play goal.
The Falcons' lone score came on the power play, pushing their scoring streak with the man advantage to two games. The Orange and Brown's longest power play scoring streak this season was three games, dating back to the first three contests of the year (Oct. 6-13).
Sophomore Mike Sullivan secured an assist in Saturday's contest, pushing his point streak to three games, the longest of his career.
The loss drops the Falcons' overall record to 3-10-4, with a record of 2-7-3-1 in the CCHA. Notre Dame now sits at 14-4-0 overall, with a conference record of 10-1-0.
Bowling Green is not back on the ice until Dec. 29, facing off against the Purple Eagles of Niagara in a single contest. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 at the BGSU Ice Arena.
