Ferris State scores four goals in the third period to defeat Falcons
BOXSCORE
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Bowling Green State University ice hockey team lost 5-1 to the Ferris State Bulldogs Friday night, extending their current losing streak to three games. Freshman Ted Pletsch scored the lone goal for the Falcons, while junior Andrew Hammond stopped 31-of-36 shots in the loss.
The Bulldogs came out on fire in the first period of play, outshooting the Falcons 12-4 in the frame. Hammond was stellar in the period, holding the nation's no. 1 team off the board with several big saves. Ferris State's Taylor Nelson stopped all four Falcon shots thrown his way, sending both teams to the locker room tied 0-0 at the first intermission.
The Bulldogs registered the first goal at the 3:39 mark of the second period, as junior Matthew Kirzinger knocked home a power-play tally after a scramble in front, giving Ferris State the 1-0 lead. The goal marked Kirzinger's eighth of the season, and twenty-fourth of his career.
Ferris State added to their lead in the first two minutes of the third period, as sophomore Garret Thompson beat Andrew Hammond for his eighth goal of the year, giving Ferris State the 2-0 lead.
The Falcons finally broke through Nelson at the 7:32 mark of the third period, as Pletsch buried his fifth goal of the season after several shots on the Ferris State net in front. Pletsch's even-strength tally cut the Ferris lead to 2-1, and pushed the momentum in Bowling Green's favor.
The Bulldogs took the momentum back however, as Ferris State scored three-straight goals to push the score to 5-1.
Freshman TJ Schlueter started the scoring spree, deflecting home a power-play goal with a questionable high stick. The play was reviewed, and eventually upheld, giving Ferris State the 3-1 lead with 10:29 left to play in the game.
Ferris State sophomore Cory Kane, and senior Aaron Schmit also light-the-lamp for the Bulldogs, capping a four goal final frame for Ferris State, the most Bowling Green has allowed in the third period all season.
Sophomore Mike Fink's assist on the lone Falcon goal snapped a personal 15-game point drought, dating back to the Falcons shootout win over Miami (Nov. 19) in Oxford.
Bowling Green has now given up a power-play tally in four-straight games, dating back to the Falcons 3-2 win at Notre Dame (Feb. 4).
The Falcons 5-1 loss Friday night extends Bowling Green's current power-play goal drought to eight games. Bowling Green has now failed to score in 33 straight power-play opportunities.
The 5-1 loss Friday night marks the first time the Falcons have allowed five goals or more since Dec. 8, when Bowling Green dropped a 6-1 decision to Western Michigan on the road.
The loss drops the Falcons' record to 9-19-5 overall, with a record of 4-17-4 in CCHA action. The win improves Ferris State's record to 21-8-4 overall, with a record of 15-6-4 in conference play.
The Falcons look to bounce back Saturday night, with an encore game against Ferris State. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
