Falcons Beat Big Ten Foe Michigan, 2-1

The Bowling Green State University baseball team knocked off University of Michigan on Tuesday afternoon, defeating the Wolverines 2-1. The game was played at the Wilpon Baseball Complex in Ann Arbor, Mich. in blustery conditions. Freshman Trevor Blaylock went seven innings for the win, while classmate Jason Link went the final two innings for the save. The Falcons improve to 12-20 on the year with the win, defeating a Big Ten Conference school for the second straight season.
The game was dominated by pitching and defense, as the two teams combined for just nine hits in the game. The Falcons did not commit an error behind their two freshman hurlers. The Falcons outhit the Wolverines 6-3 in the game.
Trevor Blaylock got the start for the Falcons, and would let up a run in the first inning, as the Falcons fell behind quickly. Blaylock would settle in after the first and was dominant for the remainder of his outing. In the final six innings of his performance, Blaylock only allowed one hit and struck out three batters.
Michigan got the scoring started in the first inning with two, two-out hits to put the Wolverines on the board early. The Falcons wouldn't get on the scoreboard until the sixth inning, when they took advantage of a few Wolverine errors to tie the game up.
Drew Kuns led off the inning by reaching on a fielding error by the second baseman. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch, and would advance to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jeremy Shay. Patrick Lancaster would single him home during the next at-bat, and the game was tied at one after 5.5 innings in Ann Arbor.
Trevor Blaylock would toe the rubber in the bottom of the sixth, sending the Wolverines back to the dugout one, two, three. In the seventh, Blaylock would get out of a two on, one out jam to keep the score tied at one apiece.
Jeremy Shay would double to left center with one out in the eighth to put a runner in scoring position for the Falcons with a chance to take the lead. Head coach Danny Schmitz would call upon Alex Davison to pinch run for Shay at second, getting some extra speed on to the base paths. After Lancaster reached on an error by the Wolverines, Jesse Rait would execute a suicide squeeze play to score Davison from third and give the Falcons the 2-1 lead.
Jason Link would come on in the bottom of the eighth to relieve Trevor Blaylock. Link would set the Wolverines down one, two, three in both the eighth and ninth inning to give the Falcons the 2-1 victory. The save was Link's first of his career.
With the win at Michigan on Tuesday, the Falcons have defeated a Big Ten Conference program for the second straight season. Last year, Bowling Green defeated Ohio State in Columbus.
The Falcons will look to keep the momentum of Tuesday's win going when they welcome the Kent State Golden Flashes to town this weekend for a crucial Mid-American Conference series. Kent State enters the series with a perfect mark in the MAC, at 9-0. The Falcons will come in at 2-7 in the MAC, but a 6-1 record at Warren E. Steller Field this season. First pitch is scheduled for 3 pm on Friday, while Saturday and Sunday's games are scheduled for 1 pm.
